It took a lot of time learning to play through each level and learning the boss patterns!
There is something about the boss music. I remember muting the TV when fighting the bosses making them easier for me. Leaving the music on made them harder/scarier to face.

The clouds are moving in the background and there are patches of grass on the ground that animates when the player runs though it.
The story is told in cutscenes between the levels.

Back then it felt like it was important to cram in as many colors as possible on screen at the same time and have a lot of parallax layers. Design, level design and gameplay came second.

Being compared to those games is a really high praise!
I played through the first game as a kid back in the day and thought I could do it again a few years ago.

It makes me happy to see that I might be on the right track here with the design and the bleakness of the game world and everything in it.

Throughout the game the player will slowly discover what happened to the player character and why it had to happen.
The story needs a dark theme and I just hope I'm not overing the darkness of the theme. I will post more of these in the future.

I don't think I've never played any of the Ultima games! After Googling Shadowloards and reading about them I bought a small bundle with Ultima IV, V and VI on GOG.
They spirit enemies I made really looks close to them! 😅
They even use a similar palette to the three color colors I am using!
