it's SUCH a huge challenge.

as much as some folks are cynical about crowdfunding campaigns, this kind of thing is one really good reason for them.

I love Baldree's cozy fantasy novels and this is a lovely review of the upcoming 3rd book (Brigands and Breadknives). But if you're like me - even though I'm a fan - I had NO idea there was a short story in the world until this review! And it's a FREE ebook!

I'm so excited for the new book... but thanks to your review I realized there's a short story I haven't read yet!!! Goblins and Greatcoats!? OMG - gotta go find a copy RIGHT NOW!!!

Yeah. It’s a very general rule at best… sometimes it’s more like 40/20/40. but it’s more accurate than whatever they calculate now.

For reals - the person who'll spend $200 on a dumbass camera to try and catch children taking $2 of candy on Halloween is a shitty person.
425suzanne.bsky.social
Hey kids - if you see this when you're trick-or-treating?

Egg that house.
a "candy cam" which is a Ring camera designed to sit over a candy bowl. the camera has a plastic "ghost" cover with a purple witch hat on it. It's $199 USD!

I get that. I think it's a shame that folks' trust has been eroded. It's a blade that cuts indiscriminately. Not all reviewers are the same and it sucks that bad actors (or just really... unprofessional? ones) get lumped in with folks doing quality work.
425suzanne.bsky.social
well that really supports what I'm seeing (anecdotally but consistently) from folks that lean heavily towards wanting playthrough content in crowdfunding campaigns. maybe I SHOULD tout that on my campaign... 🤔

"Efka says this is the way!"
425suzanne.bsky.social
I think you differentiate between a paid "preview" and a commissioned/paid "playthrough"? But maybe I misunderstood.
425suzanne.bsky.social
Interesting! That's basically what I've done for a campaign. But I didn't think of touting it.

But they are commissioned playthroughs because I view it as compensating for time/effort... plus it's all prototype bits etc so I want that noted as they play etc.

LOL obvs you can expand elsewhere. I just meant that I'm always glad to see you chime in on something I post.
425suzanne.bsky.social
AFAIC YOU (specifically you because I trust you) are absolutely welcome to expand with your thoughts on my reply or elsewhere. I apologize if I'm coming across like I'm shutting down a more expansive important discussion. I always welcome your input and appreciate you adding perspective.

I'll also say - especially(?) for folks in the US - the financial pragmatism is very real. Beyond the financial... the COST to creators beyond hard dollars is very real and pressing right now. I feel that personally and context-wise, it's top of mind so my commentary is definitely focused right now.
425suzanne.bsky.social
IN GENERAL? Woof. There's a whole lot more to it.

And varying perspectives to look at it... various context to consider, etc. etc. etc.

There's the whole "review vs criticism vs essay" convo and more. I do get that and do believe in "review" beyond a financial impact.
425suzanne.bsky.social
Absolutely. And it's a great call out.

I was responding to a question regarding previews and campaign backer timing... and I think that is a financially pragmatic question/response.
425suzanne.bsky.social
Yup. I think that's a good way to look at it.

And - it's FINE to pay for content. (This isn't aimed at you Joseph) Folks cynicism gets out of hand... paid playthroughs or content is absolutely fine.

Though the I-have-2000-subscribers-and-100-click-bait-videos-pay-me-$1500 folks can pound sand.

Becca is a delight... but is her core audience looking for a game like Lander? Maybe...? If it was more of a narrative RPG style... I'd be saying "YEAH!"

Content/Audience/Game alignment is important/valuable.
425suzanne.bsky.social
Oh I vaguely recall that campaign. It's interesting cuz they have some known VERY bad actors in their previewer list. And that's a turn off for some backers.

This also highlights that shotgunning isn't really effective. SELECT the creators who folks listen to and match the game's audience.
425suzanne.bsky.social
But it's a lot of track and measure/monitor so is the juice worth the squeeze...?

But your experience definitely reinforces what I'm seeing... playthroughs - even if folks don't watch the whole thing - do add some legitimacy. "This game is a real thing with real rules that you can experience"
425suzanne.bsky.social
Yeah. That checks out.

I will add ref links are always a rough measure of a piece of contents reach or impact. Now if the video got 100 views and 1 click? eep. But if it got 5000 views and 5 clicks.. that's actually not the end of the world.
