Without @thetriibe.com this budget coverage would be solely in the hands of the corporate media. Strongly encourage everyone in Chicago to watch this entire presser & judge for themselves. Our takeaway is that the Mayor, progressive caucus & organizers are the only responsible adults in the room.
Mayor Brandon Johnson clarified that Chicago already reaches out to people who owe debt and encourages payment.

He said the alternate alder bloc wants to sell that debt to another entity “to use practices that we know, historically, have been detrimental and harmful"

Full recording of @mayorofchicago.bsky.social press conference today. Watch it in full & judge for yourself if corporate media is covering it fairly. Framing this as a battle of the Mayor vs city council & who won is frankly, pedestrian. Mayor did a great job educating them, let’s hope they learn.

Shout out to organizers and volunteers who made over 300,000 calls, canvassed and informed their neighbors. We owe them the debt of gratitude for all the wins that were secured in this budget in spite the barrage of corporate propaganda & disinformation that was poured into this campaign.
Organizers are busting their butts trying to shift political tides at budget time. I think the City needs to give them more support: strengthen the LRB, put in an independent budget office, and make sure the Mayor's Policy and Intergovernmental offices are staffed & strong.

If higher taxes and social services were bad for the economy, then Sweden would be world’s poorest country. Corporate caucus is wrong and they know it. Our 44th ward alderman Lawson didn’t even mention his disgraceful vote in his last newsletter & for a good reason. He hoped we didn’t notice. 🙄
In this powerful piece, Elizabeth Todd-Breland reminds us that taxing wealthy corporations isn’t radical - it’s history. From the New Deal to the original corporate head tax, working people built this city, and corporations were expected to contribute to the public good.

44th ward alderman Lawson continues to be a disgrace to us all by voting with the grinch caucus. Again. Let’s see if his corporate backers get him a job after we vote him out. We think not.
Let us help you, Heather. Corporate caucus refused to reinstate a modest tax on the largest corporations, opting to sell city’s debt to private debt collectors, and remove essential CPD accountability measures instead. What could possibly go wrong?

They are meeting tomorrow morning. Come out and get your voices heard! Join the progressive coalition at 9 am tomorrow at 121 N LaSalle St for public comment and a press conference.
NEW — Today, Chicago City Council voted in favor of the alternate revenue ordinance proposal, which largely relies on debt collections to balance next year’s budget.

The proposal passed council with a 29-19 vote in favor of the alternate revenue plan.

If you think you can get 44th wards Ald. Lawson to listen to his constituents, think again. He’s MIA during public comment & is not paying attention to much of the proceedings either. But you can count on him to show up for the grinch corporate caucus & corporate interests they represent.

Ald. Lawson is once again letting us down. The grinch caucus that he’s on is not the future of our city. Raise to the moment & side with the people or be voted out.
26 Aldermen threaten to shut down Chicago's government to protect their Corporate funders. They'd rather increase taxes on your beer and liquor, and push you to gamble away more of your hard-earned money on video slots.

But there is still time to take action!

City council budget committee is meeting today at 1:30 pm. Since our 44th ward alderman Lawson doesn’t hold public meetings, this our chance to give public comment in front of the council.

Ald. Lawson, hiding in the back of the corporate caucus won’t help you. We can still see you opting to stand by corporate backers instead of everyday Chicagoans throwing city council into chaos over changes to the 1.6% of the mayor's budget. Well done, you!
Even the trib can’t cover for them. The corporate caucus alders are so desperate to please their corporate overlords, yet so incompetent. They hope to blame the Mayor for the mess they’ve made of the budget, but people of Chicago are seeing through the bullsh&t.
nothing says protecting working people like selling chicagoans’ outstanding debt to private collection agencies while using bonds to fund police misconduct settlements

Guess who made the list of ‘trust us’ caucus? Yes, he did. 44th ward alderman Lawson, we are not amused.
312 NEWS | City Budget Play-By-Play

They say the budget is “balanced”—but here’s what’s actually in it:
• Bag tax
• A burglar alarm tax on people protecting their homes
• More ads on light poles and snowplows?

All instead of taxing wealthy corporations.

This is the “Trust Us” Budget.

Checking in on our Ald. Lawson. Last week he came out against community safety surcharge and signed the corporate caucus counter-budget proposal. And today he didn’t show up to the city hall meeting that his caucus pushed for. 🤔

Mayor Brandon Johnson is doing what City Hall should be doing right now: fighting to keep Chicago open AND refusing to balance the budget on the backs of working people.

City Council has one real decision in front of them:
Tax ultra-wealthy corporations or shut down Chicago.

No garbage tax? Good. Saving youth jobs? Great.

We pushed, they folded.

But this doesn’t mean the Civic Federation has a balanced budget.

Show the math—and stop making working people the piggy bank.

Tax wealthy corporations.

Are we feeling safer yet? Ald. Lawson is getting paid advertising from a conservative group to mislead his constituents. Make sure to call him and definitely “thank” him for siding with corporations over people.
