yeah you just press what it tells you to once you've got the SPECIAL meter in the top right of your screen full, it automatically builds up while you do regular tricks but it resets if you fall off your board

for a manual you press up and then down in quick succession while you're going along a flat surface, different characters have different special tricks that you can only use once you've filled up your special meter by doing moves without wiping out but you can check them in the start menu
