Jessica: This is a topic the steering and executive committees are thinking about. No answers now but they will keep the community updated. It may be true that Garfinkel never seems to get into the details of dirty (or clean) laundry and instead draws upon his favored phenomenologists for resonant conceptual and methodological themes (including “detail” itself). He proposes to respecify such ‘classic’ themes as locally organized embodied work. Livingston dismisses Garfinkel’s theorizing and philosophizing as idle glossing in search of professional legitimacy, and Garfinkel sometimes apolo- gizes for merely theorizing about what he proposes to respecify. However, at the same time, he uses ‘classic themes’ of fact, reason, method, scientific discovery, and so on, as touchstones that provide connections and hooks to long-standing abstract issues, concerns, and preoccupations. In the absence of these resonant touchstones, “respecification” would have no point of departure and return, and we would be left with doing laundry in all of its marvelous detail. looking at human-robot collaboration led to investigating the wider discussion in #CSCW about human-AI 'collaboration'

in the end technology is just something caught in the net of the social world, it cannot be a 'collaborator' in any normally meaningful sense of that word
And it seems fair to draw the conclusion from our analyses that there are some significant conceptual problems to unreservedly appropriating this notion of ‘collaboration’ from CSCW and blandly applying it to such human-robot encounters on the streets (concurring with conclusions from Johansen et al. who argue that such mappings between HRC and CSCW may be problematic at times). It also seems likely that this is indicative of a wider problem facing CSCW itself, in which we see arguments for ceding of ground from people to machines, as in a related but broader discussion developing on “human-AI collaboration” [57]. This move could well be a significant mistake for CSCW that misunderstands collaborative action.

A new Meta AI button has been added to WhatsApp. You didn't ask for it, but they gave it to you anyways Ok so let's ask the "assistant" how to disable or remove the button. Here I'm asking this question which is met with a bizarre mangled response claiming that by deleting the chat with meta AI you can also remove the button. Except this is just a canned response which has been mangled with a spurious addition that has nothing to do with the question Let's look at our chat settings as instructed elsewhere Oh dear, looks like there's literally no option to disable this garbage from WhatsApp.

can't quite understand* why (some) HCI research is now uncritically reproducing 'artificial intelligence' (sic) and 'artificial general intelligence' (sic) ideology (scattered with little frowny-frowny very serious 'AGI challenges for HCI' bits)

Mr Howells told BBC News he was pleased with the work his legal team had done in the High Court trial, but that he would now be representing himself in a case filed with the Court of Appeal – using an "artificial intelligence agent" to assist his claim. He described AI as "an absolutely amazing technology" that had helped him better understand court processes and the law, and that he believed he had about seven "solid grounds in law" for his case, which he hopes to be able to present in-person to the Court of Appeal.

we (Hannah Pelikan, Bilge Mutlu and me) have a new paper out for #HRI2025 called "Making Sense of Public Space for Robot Design"

The main contrib is a framework for thinking about public places + robots

Paper abstract: If robots are to be deployed in public places, we need to understand what factors their design should consider. Informed by sociological studies of urban settings, particularly the work of William H. Whyte and the Street Life Project, we describe four characteristics of public places that affect and are affected by robot design: (1) localism—how robot design aligns with the identity, culture, and character of the place(s) they reside within; (2) environments—the physical characteristics of the environment in which public robots operate; (3) activities— consideration for the various daily, occasional, and situational activities that are tied to place(s) robots inhabit; and (4) sociability— how people collectively and individually relate to, interact with, and make sense of robots deployed in public places. Throughout, we illustrate these characteristics with examples drawn from empirical studies of public robots. We discuss how these key characteristics of public places can inform HRI design framework image - for actual description please refer to the paper which has textual descriptions for all quadrants / sections of this framework
