This is disturbing comparing death and deportation. There is no contingency plan for death.

Often people were at the wrong voting location. The system we use will tell us and print a slip with your correct voting location. Update your ID to match your current address and make sure it’s not expired. Again most election boards will have tools online that will tell you your voting location.

Ballots were spoiled by choosing two choices when only one is allowed. Viewing the sample ballot online will help you prepare in advance. The scanner will not accept a ballot with a doodle or drawing.

Not so good are the number of people who spoil their ballots. The instructions for marking are usually at the top. If it says bubble in the circle that’s the mark the scanner will accept. Read the instructions. Bring a pencil, check your ballot then mark with the pen provided.

What I liked most about serving as an election worker was seeing parents come in with their kids who were first time voters. I also liked that seniors valued voting the most in the general election. Lots of families came together and have conversations with young children about voting.

Escapees would show up at Union forts, where they would be sent to what was essentially a refugee camp. They began working for the army, building homes and helping others escape.
