The more I thought about A HOUSE OF DYNAMITE, the less I gravitated toward it, to the point that I barely remember anything about it.

Here are my thoughts on Kathryn Bigelow's latest film.

A TNT thriller that feels below Bigelow

I also feel some type of way that in a movie featuring Chicago as the target of an attack that we never see Chicago!

For many groups, particularly Black people, America has always been an authoritarian country.

The speed by which America collapsed into authoritarian rule is the most shocking thing. Faster than other contemporary cases. Faster than the alleged “dictator’s playbook” suggests. So fast we *shouldn’t* call it “competitive authoritarianism.” It may be worse than that.

“GOOD BOY could easily devolve into merely being a gimmick. But Alex Cannon and Leonberg’s dialogue-light script is aiming for more than DTV silliness. They’re making a movie about heart, loyalty, and friendship,” writes @812filmreviews.com.

By the end, Indy and this movie deserve a treat.

11 Rebels is terrific. One of two very good anti-authoritarian samurai movies to come out this year (the other being Muromachi Outsiders (aka Samurai Fury)).

Prisoner of War is OK too.

In my latest action column, I shouted out Scott Adkins in PRISONER OF WAR.

A heads up: Oct 11 I’ll be doing a virtual Q&A with Raoul Peck at the Gene Siskel Film Center about ORWELL: 2+2=5.

My read of the filmic language btw is that it’s Lockjaw. But I’m curious nonetheless!

(I’m intrigued by the line between depiction versus endorsement here)

A question about a moment in OBAA: When Lockjaw is leering at Perfidia from the car and PTA puts a spyglass filter on, do people think the film is sexualizing her or Lockjaw is?

One last thing, if you're reading a think piece it's worth asking: Is this actually well-argued or is the writer simply passionate? The latter can trick you into believing the former is true.

Idk I've just come across quite a few pieces whose arguments are supported by cherrypicking or not supported by the filmic language.

Separately, but somewhat connected, I do love self-publishing. There are some topics that most, especially white-owned publications won't touch. So it's obviously empowering. But I think you need to be your own best editor and know when a topic is too big for your own eyes.

And I totally get that I'm speaking from a privileged position: I'm lucky to have really good editors who push my perceptions and I'm also able to place pieces more readily with good editors.... but man, sometimes it's not worth writing the piece if you're getting the necessary support for it.
