We'll be continuing to work with Sheffield Wednesday Ladies FC on LGBTQ+ matchday campaigns this season, Aaron, and we are also hoping to develop a similar relationship with the deaf team - it's on the agenda! 🙏💙

Sheffield Wednesday top the league this weekend.

Supporting the Deaf Football team surely falls outside the #SWFC fan boycott?

Home games are Sundays at Wadsley Bridge. Deaf_owls on Insta for kick off times.

Re Rainbow Owls "You do see them doing stuff and so it's pretty visible. It's made a difference."

Even if there's still more to be done, that's lovely feedback.

Congrats!

There's some really good stuff going on and credit to your efforts... A friend has a SWFC season ticket and, re homophobia says "Where I sit, you never hear it and if someone did shout something homophobic, people would tell them."

A good shout adding the insta link - thanks!

If I'm 100% honest, I'd not really thought much about it.

But if I'm ever on a train and have a couple of hours, 'Ten strategies for teaching BSL to dyspraxic children' is the kind of writing challenge I'd love to have a go at!

A good shout about dyspraxia - it made me reflect that, in trying to be more inclusive of one group, we might accidentally make life less straightforward for another group.

I can see how everyone benefits. I can also see extra benefits for some of our neurodiverse pupils.

100% agree re boosting communication.

It'd be 45 minutes a week of learning about facial expressions, gesture and turn taking.

At the mo, Latin counts but not BSL.

I'm not against Latin, but can see the merits of Latin and BSL for different but honorable reasons.

Will be interesting to see if @beckyfrancis.bsky.social curriculum review suggests allowing it as a language alternative in primary schools.

🧏 Supporting deaf or hearing-impaired pupils in your school?

10 friendly tips to improve inclusion.

👇 Tap through, save or share with a colleague!

#EduSky #SENDAdvice
Information sheet titled:
Ten tips: Communicating with pupils
who are deaf or hearing impaired

This is page 1 and advises:
1. Speak normally: Speaking slowly or too loudly makes lip reading much more difficult.
2. Stay still: Moving around when talking makes it much harder to lip read.
3. Maintain eye contact: Face the deaf person and try not to look away or cover your mouth when you’re talking.
4. Use gestures: Use simple gestures to communicate where possible. Use whatever is around you to point or demonstrate (pointing is not rude in deaf culture).
5. Get attention: Try waving, tapping lightly on their shoulder or knocking on a table (waving for attention is not rude in deaf culture). Page two of information sheet about communicating with pupils
who are deaf or hearing impaired.

6. Do not talk when facing the whiteboard: Some teachers write on the board and comment at the same time. Do not do this. Finish your writing. Then turn and make your comment.
7. Reduce background noise: Close the room door and do everything you can to speak in a quiet environment.
8. Don’t say I’ll tell you later: Deaf young people say that someone saying “I’ll tell you later” is an absolute pet hate. They want to be as informed as their peers. If one method doesn’t work, please improvise.
9. Write it down: Use old fashioned writing to communicate.
10. Be patient: Take your time and don’t give up!
