A mother tells her son, Conrad, that he must not suck his thumb while she is away from home. She warns him that "the great tall tailor" will come for little boys who suck their thumbs, carrying a pair of "great sharp scissors". As soon as she leaves, Conrad puts his thumb in his mouth. The "red-legged scissor-man" promptly bursts into the room and, with a "Snip! Snap! Snip!," cuts off both of Conrad's thumbs. The story ends with Conrad crying in pain and his mother returning to confirm that she knew this would happen to a "naughty little Suck-a-Thumb"
