At the same time, as an old-old-head, game material like those unit listings has always taken a kind of primacy for me. The game is cannon, story is background kinda.

You are right, it exists as what seems more like the creation of internal individuals rather than company policy, as that is based on marketability to disposable income which is largely seeming to fixed on imediete aesthetic emotional impact, rules changes and shiny things (pessimistic)

Nah you right though, the good shit ( to me personally) overall got hit with backgroundification beam slowly since 1990s, because what makes money is selling the idea of cool army guys to kids disposable incomes. The good stuff is now more passion projects of internal individuals (pessimistic).

The thousand sons and tzeentch cultists have that lore. The Iron Warriors and dark mechanicum deamon engines and vehicles from chaos forge worlds have that lore. We now have models for tarellian dog soldiers and a (probably baby) barghesi. Both sides have evil, and militarily productive cultures.

? All things that are, are real. It is also notable that you have to dig through the written works for non-combat chaos writing *at all*, but theres a lot of non-combat imperial writing. Undoubtably chaos is bad and evil and cruel, but chaos worlds exist: we have the model units that come from them.

It kind of is- there are functional chaos worlds with self sustaining populations and industrial output, and entire chaos aligned species that manage to exist without everyone dieing to ultra monster hell.

Chaos is evil, but so is the imperium, no where with lobotomy factories and canibal food industries can be not (the imperium has both). What chaos is, is definitively based on individual power and fed by trauma at an epistemological level, where as the imperium is only such by choice.

Chaos is as fully functional as the imperium. There are chaos worlds with civilizations that grow and live and age, producing human forces with unique culture that dont simply all die and disapear in monster hell. They have more dang upwards mobility than the imperium for dangs sake.
