I started writing a Substack in response to you @mrjamesob.bsky.social being so taken with the dopamine as causal argument when I realised I was repeating a lot of what I said here - I'll continue with the critique of dopamine

@mrjamesob.bsky.social I’ve retitled this piece after some reflection: not to soften the argument, but to sharpen it.
It’s less about Farage alone than about how appeals to “the past” are used to excuse intolerance, then and now.
The skinhead story helps explain why

From skinhead to stigma
How a multicultural youth culture acquired a racist legacy - and why appeals to the past still excuse intolerance

Very simply @mrjamesob.bsky.social If dopamine were the driver of crime in any simple sense, then methylphenidate (Ritalin) should increase criminality in people with ADHD. It doesn’t. In fact, we see the opposite.
December 17, 2025 at 11:49 AM
Oh my God James - stop listening to amateur psychologists! @mrjamesob.bsky.social
You should know better. You are explaining socially meaningful action using molecular mechanisms without showing the causal bridge.

Now you're talking about oppositional "disorder" @mrjamesob.bsky.social
December 17, 2025 at 11:42 AM
@mrjamesob.bsky.social impulse control... it is ignored the key factor. ADHD effect on emotion - that's where the good research is. Hot headed, anger management, loss of speech/words when blinded by anger = lashing out.
December 17, 2025 at 11:39 AM
@mrjamesob.bsky.social look, I speak as someone who was a prolific offender with undiagnosed ADHD. One thing for sure, it was not dopamine driven. Dopamine is not a “pleasure chemical” and it does not directly cause decisions.
December 17, 2025 at 11:37 AM
@mrjamesob.bsky.social sounds like you have just been impressed by someone, essentially arguing that medication for ADHD causes crime... by increasing dopamine. A lot of tosh in that call - the dopamine factor is easy to grab harder to factor in to decision making
December 17, 2025 at 11:33 AM
James, the title is jarring... but accurate. The essay does (I hope) hit the target (Farage). Even if my route is a little convoluted... @mrjamesob.bsky.social

It is priced in dollars

It depends on dollar liquidity

It uses dollar on/off ramps

It is used as dirty money for sanctions busting, dirty deals. & shadow politics
