Back in March I worked with Illogic Studios on the storyboards for an animated Christmas commercial for the French supermarket Intermarché. The film is out now and it is such a joy to see all the great reactions! 🎄

This week was the Dutch Week of Children’s Books. At my daughter’s school there was market where kids could trade their books and we found this gem. The illustrations are delightful!

Lions escape in Amsterdam Stripclub: Yesterday the Amsterdam newspaper Het Parool shared this story from 1967. Amsterdam in the 60's was a pretty wild place!
On Friday, November 24, 1967, Theo de Vlieger, head zookeeper at the Amsterdam Zoo Artis, visited Kees Manders’s nightclub in the former Chez Gaston restaurant on Thorbeckeplein. He was accompanied by a police officer to review the permit application of striptease dancer Eja “Cleopatra” Kruiswegt, whose act involved two full-grown lionesses. As De Vlieger approached the cage, one of the lionesses lunged, seized him and dragged him toward the bars. Club owner Manders didn’t hesitate: he rushed forward, opened the enclosure, and drove the animal back with a stick and loud shouting. The attack stopped, allowing everyone to run for safety. In the ensuing panic the cage was left open, allowing the lionesses to wander into the nightclub. Austrian lion tamer Alwin Frans Burghardt was quickly summoned and managed to force the animals back inside. De Vlieger was taken to the hospital with serious wounds to his right hand and left arm. He later admitted he had misjudged both the lionesses’ speed and the strength of the cage. It was not the first time the animals caused a stir that week. Days earlier, police had found the same two lionesses left unattended in a parked car on the corner of Thorbeckeplein and Herengracht, after receiving a tip from a local resident. When an officer opened a hatch to check, a claw lashed out, nearly catching him. The car was impounded at police headquarters, where it was found to have defective brakes and a broken handbrake. For some reason the actor playing Major Toht wasn't available when they did this shot, so they ended up just replacing him with his signature hat and coat! And if you don't know it, you don't see it--

During the Disney Story Presentation at this year's Annecy Animation Festival, attendees got a cool storyboard sketchpad that has this very useful storyboard checklist on the back:

Give emotional moments room to breathe. There are no bad ideas in brainstorming! Only draw what’s needed to communicate an idea. Take breaks, stretch your hands out! Clarity: One idea per sketch. Think of each scene in relation to the whole story. The camera is the audience’s point of view. Conflict = Entertainment! Characters are defined by the choices they make. Eye direction is the first thing you notice in a shot. Clear drawings are better than beautiful drawings. Show, don’t tell.

Another 'Name that movie!' quiz question. Fun fact: this movie has been the most common incorrect answer. So I finally had to draw it.

Over on insta I've been having a little filmquiz with my followers for a few years now. Can they guess the movie I drew? I want to bring a little collection of these with me to Annecy in June, and am reworking some of the entries I'm less satisfied with. so can you name these movies...?
