1/3 One of my earliest memories: the birdcage in our Ohio house. At 2 or 3 years old, I’d wake up to birds singing outside… and then louder inside. It wasn’t weird to me. I thought everyone had birds in their house! Over the years, the birds disappeared until only one remained—the yellow bird.

1/5 I can’t believe I remember this, but it’s still so clear. I was 3 years old, and my dad told me, “You’ll only see this twice in your life if you’re lucky.” It was 1986, and Halley’s Comet was supposed to streak across the Ohio sky. That night, he said, “Let’s go see it together.”…
