The Russians are sending drones all over Europe, Israel is using very old public guilt as cover for committing genocide, and the United States is sinking into authoritarianism, but I have good news: in Croatia, they have chips that taste exactly—not just a little, exactly—like fried chicken.

The MAGA following would really like to Memento away everything they’ve discovered about Trump and Epstein so that they can keep digging and continue to give their lives purpose rather than face up to their own complicity.

8/8 For what it’s worth, I can’t think of anyone whose public writing is more reverential of our American inheritance than that of @jamellebouie.net. And yet, who would doubt his critical bona fides? I guess I’ll just end by saying everyone should read his stuff. END

7/8 . . . liberal arts education? You can’t just wield cultural (and certainly not governmental) power to silence opinions you don’t like. You engage them and fold them into a rugged but compassionate common understanding. How did we forget that? . . .

6/8 . . . and the presidency of Lincoln and Reconstruction, John Brown, Thaddeus Stevens. Inasmuch as we honored the best and acknowledged the worst parts of that heritage, we seemed healthy enough. But you know what I learned from a lengthy (and far too expensive) . . .

5/8 If any nuance is needed, then sure, maybe there were some public commentators and academics whose style came across as acrimonious or jaded. In my heart of hearts, I thought, “Gosh, I’m not ready to throw out all my reverence for the cultural inheritance of the American Revolution . . .

4/8 First of all, yes, the president damn well is whitewashing slavery, and shame on anyone who obfuscates that. To address thee argument she’s making, I’ll note that it’s basically the hammer/nail chestnut: to a hammer, everything is a nail. . . .

3/8 . . . When a panelist raised what this meant for depictions of slavery, Michaels jumped to the president’s defense, saying that he was not ‘whitewashing’ slavery and that ‘when you make every single exhibit about white imperialism, when it isn’t relevant at all, that is a problem.’” . . .

2/8 Here is the passage: “Midway through, the conversation turned to President Donald Trump’s recent directive to ensure the Smithsonian Institution ‘celebrate American exceptionalism’ and ‘remove divisive or partisan narratives.’ . . .

1/8 I don’t really much invest in what Julian Michaels thinks, but the anecdote that starts this article raises my hackles. So, a thread. www.nytimes.com/2025/08/25/w...

Damn man, why have I only been listening to James Taylor in his cozy, established niche. I’d never listened to his first, eponymous album. It’s urgent and experimental and sumptuous. And the Abbey Road production is just wicked. Total revelation, man. open.spotify.com/album/67zzo0...

. @katemanne.bsky.social, by my lights the most important feminist philosopher in the world, makes a VERY compelling case that Donald Trump raped a 13-year-old girl. This includes terrifying details, but it must be read. open.substack.com/pub/katemann...

Once an acquaintance of mine who did not know I was in an interracial relationship started posting about how those relationships were immoral because the power dynamic made them inherently abusive. There does seem to be an urge to categorize and separate that nominal leftists are not immune to.

Dems should be scrambling to figure out what possible candidates can go short-form, vertical-video viral in Idaho, Nebraska, and Texas.

invested in Crochet and Bregman, and everyone knew—including Raffy—that they were going to have to make some tough choices. Blaming the management for him being a moping wet towel is BS. And now they’ve kicked his ass out, and still they’re the bad guys. I’m sick of hearing it.

I feel the opposite way. Devers is prideful and emotionally immature, and he was poisoning the team. Good. Riddance. And quite frankly, I think there’s some sort of weird mass hysteria going down: The ownership gets crapped on no matter what they do. Everyone ripped them a new one until they . . .

I know they’re friends, but I can’t wait to see Bello smoke the chip off Raffy Devers‘s shoulder. I had quite enough of him sulking like Achilles, and I’m glad he’s gone #redsox
