To me it's more about having various quarter tone-ish intervals (neutral 2nds, 3rds, 6ths, 7ths, different augmented 4th vs diminished 5th) than approximating JI.

Thank you! It's 17 equal divisions of the octave, and it's through the frets. They are a bit closer together than on a normal guitar.
