This is fun to say, but I think it's more fear than grandiosity. These guys worry they're going to get eaten by the next wave. Kodak was an extremely strong business until it wasn't. You can argue that they over-index on that fear, but it's not completely irrational.

Same energy when they used to talk about mocap for VFX films. "Look! Tom Hanks just danced around with all this goofy stuff attached to him, and the computers turned it into movie magic!!!" But it turns out a crew of 80 people worked for nine months to animate it using the mocap as loose reference.

Yeah community correction, but also kind of like "hey guys, have you noticed how exploration in language space is totally cursed?"

So I think you're kind of right, but I also think some people needed to be told that, so maybe it's still valuable?

I love the phrase "vibe physics"

I think there is also a sense that the AI is outside your normal social system, so you know you can talk to it without having to worry that it's going to tell somebody else what you said. It's more private.

Don't worry you'll figure it out

Seriously, this group is world-class (literally no peers) at converting the "find out" part of the phrase "f*ck around and find out" into a long term strategic advantage.

Yeah, makes sense, I don't have a great sense of the scale of these things.
June 27, 2025 at 6:52 PM
Yeah, I guess I just mentioned it because there has been talk about building new power for rapid expansion of AI datacenters. But also, it's telling that it went from zero to video games in a pretty short amount of time! Unless we think it will all blow up soon, expect a lot of growth!

If we had the brown out problem solved would it meaningfully change the graph? Is electricity cost/availability a bottleneck for many industries here besides giant AI, which has only been a thing for like 18 months? (Genuine questions, don't know the answer)
June 27, 2025 at 4:19 PM
Sorry Chris, but that is not a great conclusion to draw from this. China has 4x the population, was starting from a place of much less development, and their economy is manufacturing so of course they are adding new generation. What would the US have done with more electricity production over 20yrs?
