I'm testing a floater decals workflow with GeoNodes.
It does subdivision, shrinkwrap and normal transfer, with adjustable offset and width.
Making panels will be very easy and nondestructive this way

A combination of custom shaders, smart normals manipulation, and of course a lot of artistic input.
You can get the lighting intensity in a post process material by dividing the "final render" with the diffuse color. Then use a threshold on that, and multiply it back with diffuse color. Link below
