in 1817 James Mill cemented the notion of India vs Hindustan in his "the History of British India"- the first being aborginal and native and the second foreign and barbaric-one Hindu and other Muslim.

in 1786 Jones gave his third annual discourse for the Asiatick Society he had disambiguated India from Hindustan, India was Hindu and Hindustan was Muslim.

When Jones updated this grammar in 1783 he included an extract from the memoirs of Emperor Jahangir which contains a passage describing Agra. Jones left the passage untranslated. Proverbial colonial student would read "Hindustan" in Persian and write "India" in English(process of eliding "Hindustan"

William Jones (1746-1794) arrived in Calcutta in 1783 to work as judge at Fort Williams in Bengal. his work Grammar of Persian Language , he translated "hindu" as "black" as well as "Indian". (Atlantic slave trade influenced Jones attitude towards hindus; sees them enslaved)
