I genuinely don't know what we'd do this year without @51st.news and @maustermuhle.bsky.social. Why is a scrappy worker-owned outlet always the first to get to the crux of an issue? This caliber of reporting used to be normal but profit-greedy hedge funds have been slowly sucking it out of our lives

For all of their quirks and faults, this morning the D.C. government and its 35,000 employees got to work.

The much larger federal government we share a city with, though, is a different story.

How will the federal shutdown affect us in D.C.? @maustermuhle.bsky.social reports ⬇️

Academic workers from the AAUP and AFT won a federal lawsuit against the Trump administration's actions against noncitizen students and faculty for pro-Palestine speech.

The case underscores the power of unions to resist authoritarianism and shows workers' rights = civil rights = immigrant rights 🧵

Judge Young (a Reagan appointee) ruled in favor of the AAUP/AFT and against Trump for punishing immigrant students for pro-Palestine speech.

His decision remarks that the government's campaign goes "beyond its closest analogues in the Red Scare."

Here's how he starts the decision off:
A photocopied letter reads "Trump has pardons and tanks.... what do you have?" The judge responds "Alone, i have nothing but my sense of duty. Together, we the people of the united states - you and me - have our magnificent constitution. Here's how that works out in a specific case.

Horrifying— Barbara Gomes Marques went with her US citizen husband and lawyer on 9/16 to a green card appointment at USCIS office in downtown LA where she was tricked into walking down a hallway away from them, was snatched by ICE and never came back. She now faces imminent deportation in Louisiana.
