If a taboo was broken, her hair would get filthy and entangle the animals, preventing the hunters from catching food.
The Angakkoq (shaman) would travel to the bottom of the sea to comb her hair and release the animals. She would tell him which taboos were broken and he would bring the message back

In 1953 the former inhabitants of the area were forcibly moved to Qaanaaq or "New Thule", 100 km (62 mi) to the north.
