The most complicated thing to understand about this situation is how Russia is at all feasible. On what principles does the universe contain an entire and rather large space where millions of people who want to kill, rape, and destroy their neighbors live? People for whom the secret not only of a different culture but of life itself is worth nothing. And even if some of them are not prepared to go and take up arms, they passionately delegate the right to this to their fellow countrymen, their “own lads,” their “own boys.” They support them in every possible way and grieve for them. And this is absolutely understandable because Russian state policies, particularly domestic ones, have totally lost even their tentative compliance with the law. Ordinary criminals behind bars are being recruited in the tens of thousands to units of the armed forces. Tens of thousands of citizens are being mobilized for the sake of genocide against Ukrainians on Ukrainian territory, so sacred to every Russian. In one way or another, all the citizens of this country have become participants in this war. There are no innocents there. So, what is this “great Russian culture”? How is this culture, the main result of whose existence has been constant wars of aggression, all-out genocide, the destruction of entire peoples, as well as the emergence of an ideology that has been officially called Ruscism, even possible? I think that “schizofascism” is a more fitting term, because in it is the imminent need to be a fascist but at the same time to call the Other a fascist, thereby gaining the right to pass final judgment on the Other and, ultimately, his/her murder. The sense of themselves and their tribesmen as beings that have the right to physically destroy Others is a distinctive feature of the contemporary “great Russian culture.”

The Western press turned Navalny into a martyr because it served the narrative. Russian opposition turned him into a symbol because they needed one. And the internet amplified both versions until "Navalny = anti-corruption hero" became accepted truth in the West, erasing his actual ideology. So let me sit with your original argument more seriously: If I can't sort signal from noise - if I can cite a ultranationalist as an example of truth-telling without catching it - what hope does the average person have? The information environment isn't just biased, it's systematically corrupting our ability to evaluate truth claims. And that might be worse than simple propaganda. Soviet citizens knew Pravda was lies. But we don't know what we don't know. We think we're informed. That is the engineered helplessness you're talking about, isn't it? Not that we can't access information, but that we've lost the ability to process it reliably. What examples were you thinking of when you said "worst tyrants grabbing the reins"? I want to make sure I'm seeing what you're seeing.

Big picture: Putin's a product of state power granting oligarchs fiefdoms. Trump was the dumbest, most compromised, and ultimately most expendable of them. He should've been easily stopped.

We'll have to fight this after Putin and Trump are gone.
While all of this was happening, while his own supporters were burning their hats and publicly questioning the movement he built, Trump spent the weekend golfing with Lindsey Graham in Palm Beach and partying at Mar-a-Lago with billionaires. As always, he showed the base what we’ve been saying for years: he has no loyalty to anyone but himself and his rich friends.
