Indisputable that serious people & experts including within our DoD believe the lab leak theory is plausible or even likely. It’s certainly unfair to label it as fringe/conspiracy. For those who do, I’m not sure that the say-so of a Chinese scientist will carry much water.

Why not add his mom?

I know these from my childhood. We would inadvertently set them off while traipsing around the hillside behind my parents' house. Never pleasant, the squirt of fluid or the sting of the hairy fruit on our legs. Also a not-so-appetizing smell when they go off. Do not recommend on toast.

SHUT UP HE CAN DO ANYTHING HES TRUMP

(Sorry I'm still detoxifying from the other place)

I know that many people are ignorant/uninformed. Still I think marginal voters could tell that Trump was concerned and willing to upset the apple cart on their behalf whereas I think Dems and Harris were too easily portrayed as defending the status quo and caring about “those other people.”

I think Biden was truly progressive (even if not AOC progressive) and advanced worthwhile goals with good policies. But inflation and his advanced age did him and us in. But yeah the last part I agree with a version of that. If by "its base" you mean non college educated/working class.

She did a lot of damage in 2020 when candidates climbed over one another to take extreme positions on policing and immigration eg. And it's not just or primarily Harris (who was dealt a very tough hand). It's the party. It's the entire approach that smells of liberal elitism.
November 19, 2024 at 2:19 AM
I agree money in politics is the corrupting influence. Those rich donors would much rather fund cultural rather than economic progress. I also do think that woke signaling is alienating to many and a genuine problem for the Left.
November 19, 2024 at 2:01 AM
I know the Right lies and demonizes. And I agree Dems should start standing for something--something that a winning majority of the country including the working class can get behind. Broad economic issues should be at the center of the Democratic identity & maximalist cultural tokenism avoided.

She could only do so much. She was not at fault for a very difficult starting point. But the structural problems with a party that is supposed to represent working people and is increasingly losing working people of all races (including union members) remain.
November 19, 2024 at 1:50 AM
People can tell when you're not being open and honest about what you stand for. The problem was more that she simply was not a credible voice on the economy. She didn't speak passionately or in detail or extemporaneously on this topic--nothing like what she brought to "democracy" and "abortion."
November 19, 2024 at 1:49 AM
She did it in 2020 and it was used against her this time. It's hard to run away from things you said and did only 4 years ago.
November 19, 2024 at 1:44 AM
The point is not that these are centerpieces, it's that Dems who need the votes of centrists and less engaged voters are endorsing maximalist virtue signal positions--like defunding police or decriminalizing border crossings--that are not even popular among the minorities they claim to defend
November 19, 2024 at 1:43 AM
And these days it seems that liberal nonprofits feel compelled/obligated to stake positions on any number of "justice" issues that don't touch directly on their core missions. So the pressure on any position is coming from many directions, not just from the relevant nonprofits.
November 19, 2024 at 1:35 AM
Woke oneupsmanship is rife in liberal nonprofits. Some deal directly with gender but the point is not gender. This is equally the case for policing, immigration, and race preferences, where liberal orthodoxy is well to the left of not only the median voter but the minorities Dems claim to defend
November 19, 2024 at 1:32 AM
I said none of that tbh. It's definitely not but note that Dems are working on losing the Hispanic and Black working class as well.
November 19, 2024 at 1:24 AM
Which isn’t to say you don’t fight for justice. But a broad coalition like the Dems has to pick its fights carefully.
November 18, 2024 at 8:50 PM
Completely agree. I think it’s difficult to reconcile deeply held values with the fact that not everyone shares them and that this fact contributes to what we perceive as injustice and limits our political options.
November 18, 2024 at 8:50 PM
Sorry not sorry. The rights of trans athletes to compete against other females is an example. The right of Blacks to reparations commensurate with the horrors of slavery is another. So is the right to asylum to all seekers. Rights are contested and limited by political and practical considerations.
November 18, 2024 at 8:15 PM
You're responding to a person who believes maximalist positions should always be pursued when it comes to "rights". In fact rights are often subjective and in tension with one another. A party that says only yes to the requests of every interest group will alienate the median voter.
