I think having a great onboarding and up-to-date documentation is much a rarity. Definitely on the software engineering side, however academia likely enforces some better hygiene.

I'd expect a week or two to get the environment set up usefully. And another week or two to even start diving in to code meaningfully. And another two months of finding random undocumented bits. More "heckin disorganized" than a learning curve.
