A lot by dipping into other colours as you render. You do it a bit with skin sometimes, for example, when you add orange at the shadow's line. You can do it with everything, like a piece of latex changes completely if you added a bright blue/purple right before the highlight or as ambient lighting

I agree, yeah. You usually shoot for cooler, muted tones and not a lot of shifts in hue in between. Not to say that's wrong; it's good in like, diffuse and dark lighting conditions (like indoors) where you'd need more restraint (pun.) But in more vibrant lighting conditions you could make things pop
