I wish I had time to read this article 😉

"With thousands of papers being published everyday, it can be a task working out which matter".

Conclusion: "No single method will solve the challenge of staying on top of the literature"

AI update for my summer online course: More than 50% of the class are on the list to be reported for AI use. 80% have at least 1 initial serious flag of AI use before review. (No detectors, just strategic assignment design & in-depth reviews)

Are online courses dead? @academic-chatter.bsky.social

Today I spoke to a student w. a green card who was worried about that documentary had "political content" because of what's happened to student activists at Columbia etc. The subject? Life in a particular Jersey City neighbourhood. Chilling effect is real 😩

Hello #AcademicSky!

How do you keep track of your tasks & projects?

Any brilliant (free?) software/websites/programs I should know about?

Trying to organize #research, #projects, #publications, #tasks, #e-mail (etc, etc) in one place . . .

@academic-chatter.bsky.social I'm curious to know whether any #HigherEd institutions have 'baked in' #SocialMedia #outreach in the collective agreements or in performance appraisal forms/templates (and not only as this relates to speech and academic freedom, but also in terms of #OpenResearch). TIA!

Just gave workshop in which we discussed use of AI for writing research grants. Two people advocated for outsourcing proposal development to an external company (of which they know) that uses AI only to write grants FOR academic researchers.

Thoughts??
Thx!

#academicchatter @academic-chatter.bsky.social Do any fellow college professors have any insight on what might be going on? Or is this just bias toward a short, woman professor? Any advice if so?

I get a few online teaching reviews every year like: She treats us like we are children/teaches like elementary school. But I’m asking them to do workplace-level applications & mediator identification? All I can guess is they think I look/dress like a kindergarten teacher & are transferring that?

Two characteristics that I found are strong predictors in the long term career successes of trainees:

curiosity - following up on interesting observations & wondering “why?”

courage - willingness to take risks, follow their own path & accept uncertainty

A question for #AcademicChatter - are there any examples of universities that operate as worker co-ops? Either historical or current examples, or university-adjacent institutions?

#NTUDoctoral snapshots - I feel after these two days that the future is in good hands. I listened to research today on everything from early Alzheimer’s diagnosis for adults with Down syndrome to understanding the behaviour of specific proteins associated with forms of cancer. #AcademicChatter

I have a new piece coming out with @chronicle.com on the problem of pregnancy in academia. a sneak peek:

“an academic I spoke with told me a prof looked at his pregnant advisee & sneered, ‘once could be construed as an accident. it now looks like you’re doing this on purpose’”

📭 I get that journals are overloaded, truly.
But is it common to get a desk reject after 5.5 months? ❌ No review, no prior communication, just a sudden “outside the scope”. Curious how others see this – is this within the realm of normal these days? @academic-chatter.bsky.social #publishingrealities

If any educators have knowledge of legal defense funds for students who’ve had their visas revoked, please share & I will keep sharing. This is inflicting unnecessary trauma on these students, their peers, & the faculty + staff that have to sit back & watch it happen.

The problem with working on big high-risk projects is they don't always end in the glorious impactful work. If they're truly 'high risk', they often just end in failure. Or else requiring huge effort to save.

I'm painfully learning this lesson after seeing a few of my 'flagship' projects crash.
