Some residents of Southern California were under evacuation orders on Friday as an unusually strong storm system moved through the region, bringing with it a risk for flash flooding and landslides in areas recently burned by wildfires. The wet storm brought an initial soaking of rain earlier on Friday. But the worst is yet to come. On Saturday, forecasters expect heavier rain to raise the risk of flash flooding as the system pulls in additional moisture off the Pacific Ocean.

In his Thursday order, the Rhode Island judge, John J. McConnell Jr., admonished the Trump administration for opting to make only partial SNAP payments, saying the administration knew this would only further delay getting aid to people. He ordered the administration to tap into a $23 billion fund for school lunch and child nutrition programs to pay for full SNAP benefits in November. USDA, however, has repeatedly refused to tap into that money, arguing that it is separate from SNAP and that the government does not have funds because of “congressional failure” to appropriate new money. In court papers, the administration said it would not “raid an entirely different program” because it could lead to a shortfall in funding school meals.

Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky, the chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, said on Sunday that he intends to subpoena Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, the retired government infectious disease specialist, to testify before his committee if Fauci does not agree to do so voluntarily. Paul made his comments in a virtual address to a conference hosted by Children’s Health Defense, the nonprofit that Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. founded and led until he ran for president. The senator has been a relentless critic of Fauci, who helped steer the nation through the coronavirus pandemic, repeatedly accusing him of covering up evidence that Covid-19 was the result of a laboratory leak, and of lying to Congress. Fauci, who has vehemently denied those accusations, had no comment on the senator’s remarks.

By Sunday morning, officials in several states said they remained unsure how the directive would affect the roughly one in eight Americans who rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program to buy groceries.

A recent analysis from KFF found that if the enhanced premium tax credits expire, as they are currently set to do on Dec. 31, ACA enrollees will see their monthly premiums more than double – rising by roughly 114% on average. An estimated 22 million out of 24 million ACA marketplace enrollees are currently receiving a tax credit to lower their monthly premiums. Even if those credits are extended, KFF found that the amount insurers charge for ACA premiums will rise by an average 26% in 2026.

The five include perhaps the best known German stage comedians who survived previous Chamber of Culture purges and still dared to indulge in political witticisms- namely, Werner Finck, Peter Sachse and “The Three Rulands,” represented by Helmuth Buth, Wilhelm Meissner and Manfred Dlugi. Their expulsion means that they are henceforth forbidden to appear be- fore the public in Germany. Besides motivating this action in an official communiqué, Dr. Goeb- bels also publishes a long article in the Voelkischer Beobachter in which he denounces them as “brazen, im- pertinent, arrogant and tactless” and generally imitators and succesors to Jews. Simultaneously he denounces the “society rabble that followed them with thundering applause—parasitic scum, inhabiting our luxury streets, that seems to have only the task of proving with how little brains people can get along and even acquire money and prominence." As regards the details of the “crimes" of which the five are accused. Dr. Goebbels mentions that they made political witticisms about the colonial problem, the 4-Year Plan and Chancellor Hitler’s monumental* building program and one of them even raised the question of whether there was any humor left in Germany today.
