A favorite verse: "For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus, to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." Ephesians 2:10
In the words of William Wordsworth, "the world is too much us."

.... “God doth not need
Either man’s work or his own gifts; who best
Bear his mild yoke, they serve him best. His state
Is Kingly. Thousands at his bidding speed.
And post o’er Land and Ocean without rest:
They also serve who only stand and wait.”

~John Milton

It’s a pity that progressives do not believe the Biblical account of human nature, for racism is a sin--that most Christian concept. It's more than an ethical breach. It is the marriage of irrational hubris and blinding fear. It is cousin to jealousy, lust, anger, gluttony. Preach that sermon.

Surely the Second Coming is at hand."

In Jane Eyre, Blanche wanted a husband but was mocked; Bertha needed care but was placed in chains; Adèle deserved affection but was tolerated. On the other hand, Jane needed a moral epiphany to see herself in Bertha but received fortune; and Rochester was rewarded. This cannot be a great book.

From the play Sir Thomas Moore

Should so much come too short of your great trespass
As but to banish you, whether would you go?
... this is the strangers case;
And this your mountainish inhumanity.

by William Shakespeare

Jesus--that is all.

Don't get it twisted. DT's victory was among the closest in modern US history. He won the popular vote, but even then, by the narrowest of margins. More significantly the majority of those who went to the polls REJECTED him. Chose someone else. His is in every meaningful sense a minority presidency.

David and Beowulf had many similarities, but to David's "the battle belongs to God," Beowulf raised his own strength. Sadly in the end that mattered little: they fought, became kings, and ultimately failed due to personal weaknesses. God help us when we believe our faith is an impenetrable shield!

Four dudes on "2way" declare--with straight faces--being dumbfounded at people disliking CK.

I cannot decide whether they are lazy, cowardly, or of bad faith.

Do they not know what CK said about Michelle Obama, Simone Biles, Ketangi Brown, and all the others?

Sooooo sad.

Perhaps our real question, as Christians, ought not to be what does the Bible say, but what does the Bible teach.

How pathetic are we, as a species?

The words of a self-proclaimed "Christian thinker" this week: "There is a direct line b/n ... abortion and... the killing of political opponents... As a Christian, I think you have to leave the Democratic party."

And to think we thought there was just one God.🙃

One reason to believe in God: humanity always has. Across centuries, peoples have always embraced a god close to the God in the Bible, all-powerful, all-knowing, sovereign. We fear him, long for him, hope for his blessings, and dread his judgment. That instinct is not peripheral; it is universal.

I had a choice today of what to post: my rejoinder to Justice Barrett's recent SCOTUS assertions or a poem by Ellen Bass. I chose the ladder.

The Thing Is
to love life, to love it even
when you have no stomach for it.

The Bible and Shakespeare show immigration is an ancient issue. And they adopt contrary takes. For Scripture, it's fundamental to faith, to Christian ethic. For Shakespeare, it's the stage upon which betrayal, survival, and domination unfold.

Which vision is truer is for you to decide, dear Reader.

Does the pursuit of holiness and righteousness feel overwhelming? Do they seem like unattainable ideals? Even love, with all its beauty, can sometimes feel fickle. But when all else falters, there’s a simpler path to follow: goodness!

We know God‘s what. We know what he wants. Peace. Justice. Love. Holiness. Forgiveness. What we don’t know is how: how, for every given situation, he wishes to move. He wishes to reveal his presence. Is it in the wind? A fire? An earthquake? Or a quiet whisper.

To like DT, by definition, is to reject compassion, decorum, goodness, truth, and morality (as traditionally defined in the West) as our defining values. There are others of course: nationalism, religion, order, hierarchy, money among them. It is a choice--a distinction with a clear difference.

American Evangelicals met Donald Trump and forgot their religion. To be fair, they were never really into Jesus. It was the Apostle Paul who was always their man.

We often say, "put yourself in the other person's shoes."

But Jesus said something different. "Love your neighbor as yourself."

His words are stunning: take your neighbor and put them in your shoes, your home, your church, your country. Now, love that person the way you love you.

Stunning.

For those who pray for God to bless the United States as a goal still to be achieved, what specific blessings are you hoping for that the country has yet to receive?

In the post USAID ruckus, we spoke of US officers whose lives were uprooted and beneficiaries facing great uncertainty. Much less of third group--the local staff.

For them, a "regular" job is more than 'livelihood'; it is a lifeline for the employee and 10-15 besides.

Thinking of them tonight.

We often discuss whether folks believe God exists--but there is another question that may be as useful: do they believe Satan exists?

For me, the answer is yes. And he means to destroy. And I am not no match for him. That explains, in part, my Christian faith.
