Just had my publicity meeting today with @tachyonpub.bsky.social and I am SO excited for IGNORE ALL PREVIOUS INSTRUCTIONS. Can't wait to be able to share more about it with you in the new year - plus a cover reveal, and a couple of other goodies soon? #IgnoreThisBook

Yes, exactly. Hope can show up in so many forms.

And to be clear, people who write & critique hopepunk and other hopeful types of story often *are* engaging with this question very deeply - I am not attempting to claim that they aren't, or that no one is. This is more just a response to quick takes that are floating around in the discourse.

Because there are so many *interesting* varieties of hope - and varieties that are thought provoking enough to be useful, even if they're maybe not 100% how it would work in real life - and there are also toxic varieties, which can be toxic in more than one way.

I think one of the other things about the call for "hopeful fiction" - and the question of whether hopeful fiction is what we need now - is that it's paradoxically not specific enough.

Like, what kind of hope? What kind of future is hopeful? What does the author imagine about how we can get there?

And as long as it's not actively harmful, I feel a writer's first responsibility should be to write what's in their own unique heart. Do that with skill, and it will reach readers in helpful ways that the writer might never have anticipated.

I feel this so hard. I would not call my own writing nihilistic, but I do feel a knee-jerk exasperation/opposition to anyone saying there's only one way for writing to meet a historical moment. There are always going to be a multitude of readers with a multitude of needs.

I have decided that "polarization" is a useless word.

If people sharply disagree about something, why?

"Because some mechanism rewards/encourages sharp disagreements" could be part of the answer, but is rarely the whole one, and can obscure what is actually at stake in the disagreement.

Oh boy. I guess that one is more timely now than ever, huh.

Although, I'm not really sure how they're supposed to hold elections in 2026 if they're still being bombed at that time?

About time. I'm pretty mad at Carney rn about a lot of things, but I'm glad he at least did this one.

Write what you want.
Embrace who you are.
Forget everything else.
Get lost in the art.

Okay, the word I cannot spell correctly is "milieu."
ada-hoffmann.bsky.social
That is wild. I had no idea.

I... What... In what circumstance would this actually be used?
