Canada and the rest of the Commonwealth defended us in two world wars. The UK should be standing foursquare with Canada on this one.

I am a Green Party member and do not support this idea, for exactly the reasons you mention. You need to balance sustainability with practicality. A lot of families struggle with bi-weekly collections. Monthly collections are just nuts.
