Rachel Robinson, Jackie's widow, was born so long ago she could have met Alexander Graham Bell and is still alive today at 103. Queen Elizabeth II was born and passed away within her lifetime—and she lived to 96. (cc: www.reddit.com/r/BarbaraWal...)

Also that week: RIP Nipsey Russell, we were excited that NBC had made a deal to bring Aaron Sorkin back to tv with a show then titled "Studio 7 on the Sunset Strip," and @stevehasegawa.bsky.social inventoried all the items existing to-date on The Island. throwingthings.blogspot.com/2005/10/numb...

Sure, and they will continue to be wrong and not worth convincing because they choose to be impervious to evidence.

I checked to see what I was blogging about that week, and it looks like I discussed the recent SNL season premiere and said "some of the new kids (whoever did Pacino) might be part of the Next Great Cast." Here that is, queued. You already know who it was.

Oh, us East Coasters read the New Yorker article.

I also suggested that in other comments -- that the homeowners insurance company, if no one else, would get to the bottom of this. It's their job. Because whatever caused this -- exploding appliance, a contractor, whatever -- they can get sued for recovery here.

If you assume nefariousness then you can always twist the absence of evidence into proof of ill conduct. Be skeptical when appropriate, but don't live in denial when the facts speak otherwise.

I agree that this investigation remains ongoing. What I am claiming is that as long as they're saying "there's no evidence" we shouldn't insist that there is or will be. We can be patient and fact-based even when Republicans wouldn't be.

It's a good article. I also assumed that "Les Fasnacht" was just a great fake name a fairgoer provided to a reporter in Lancaster ("Fasnacht" being the traditional Amish pre-Lent donuts) but Votebuilder has a lot of Fasnachts listed. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fasnach...

Pennsylvania Republicans are aiming to erase Democrats' majority on the state supreme court in November.

But this sort of push has virtually no precedent or template in this state, making a weird campaign where everyone is trying to find their mark.

A great new read:

Inside the Clunky Elections to Control Pennsylvania's Supreme Court - Bolts
The GOP is making an expensive push to end Democrats’ majority on a court at the center of election lawsuits, sparking a fledging campaign season with little precedent or template.

Of course. But until there is evidence (and while the fire officials are saying "we have found none"), people shouldn't insist that there is.

They always can conduct their own investigation. That's what happens in these cases.

Friends, even if you distrust local law enforcement, understand that the judge's homeowners insurance company will very much want to identify the correct cause. If a person was at fault, if an appliance was at fault, the insurer can sue to recover on this massive claim. (It's called subrogation.)

seeing otherwise smart people share the story that a south carolina judge’s beach house was burned to the ground because of a ruling against trump despite there being no evidence of that has been frustrating. just because the other side has abandoned facts doesn’t mean we can, too.
adambonin.bsky.social
It's only a kerfuffle; has not yet advanced to brouhaha or fracas level, let alone a donnybrook.
adambonin.bsky.social
I worked for seven years at a law firm with a massive subrogation practice, with the City's former fire commissioner on staff as an investigator. This is what they did: determined what caused massive fires, and sued whoever was responsible to recover on behalf of the insurer.
adambonin.bsky.social
As I've noted to others, their homeowners insurance company has every interest in getting this right, given their subrogation rights. If an appliance was defective, they will want to sue; if an individual did this, ditto.
adambonin.bsky.social
If nothing else, their homeowners insurance company is going to make sure that they have the correct cause for this fire, because if it was intentionally set they have rights they're going to pursue.
adambonin.bsky.social
I think @jscram3254.bsky.social is right that there's no reason to ensnare local fire depts in the conspiracy, but beyond that you know who really *does* care about getting the fire cause right? The judge's homeowners insurance company. And *they* will make sure the right determination is made.
