Relatable
Morality was an omnipresent theme in the political discourse of early perestroika. From leaders to dissidents, from communists to nationalists and liberals, all testified to the strong sense of moral decline in Soviet society, characterized in this case by the spread of hypocrisy, cynicism, and the moral disorientation of the youth. The relatively stable economic situation did not prevent many from experiencing a feeling of degradation, corruption, or decay. This feeling, in turn, inspired countless calls for a renewal, purification, or invigoration of morals. In this context, perestroika was widely welcomed by Soviet society as a salutary effort to remedy a moral decay many deemed increasingly unbearable. As one popular slogan from the period pro- claimed, "We can no longer live like this."
