On Friday they put a hat on my head, and called me "Dr. Smith" #phDONE

Looking forward to continuing to work with wildlife and nature into the future!

And I'll be on Bluesky for it too!!!
Me, PhD.

I’m at a #NatureRestoration event where the dinner menu has wild venison to create a discussion about invasive species and the reintroduction of predators. A tasty way to stimulate debate. @irishrainforest.bsky.social @whittledaway.bsky.social @thinkorswim.bsky.social

This is the guy who went to Iran and told everyone how great it was, the week they hanged a bunch of women. Freedom and justice for Palestine, but not for Ukraine. I still hope they stay safe and succeed, but:

My latest paper, just published in #ESA's Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment, focuses on the need to think about spatial patterns and sampling design when attempting to measure ecological #spillovers from protected areas. 🌍🦑🧪

Conceptualizing and measuring ecological spillover effects from protected areas

President Trump:

After getting to know and fully understand the Ukraine/Russia Military&Economic situation and, after seeing the Economic trouble it is causing Russia,❗️I think Ukraine, with the support of the European Union,is in a position to fight& WIN all of Ukraine back in its original form.

- Science-based herd monitoring
- Science-based, sustainable cull plan
- Vension goes into the food chain
- Public safety a priority, hiring very experienced vets and hunters (not snipers, the headline is misleading)

A good example of urban wildlife management 🦌

www.thejournal.ie/opw-has-paid...
OPW has paid snipers €17,000 to kill 118 deer in Phoenix Park since last year - including fawns
Four culls took place at the park last year, resulting in 93 wild deer being fatally shot.

A new #EUROLYNX paper out on variability in the movement and foraging behaviour of female Eurasian #lynx during the denning season across Europe! 🐈

🐾Movement metrics and kill-to-den distances were evaluated using GPS data from two climatic regions.

We could have been providing military aid to Ukraine. We could have been building our partnerships in the Pacific. We could have strengthened Europe’s defense industrial base. We could have helped build state capacity in South America.

What a fucking disaster this has all been.

A brilliant piece by @ellamcsweeney.bsky.social in the @irishtimes.com this morning highlights the lack
of enforcement of environmental legislation.

North Cork Creameries (a member of Bord Bia’s Origin Green programme) has been issued with 125 non-compliance notices since 2020.
EPA licensing rules to protect our fragile rivers are being repeatedly breached
Public records about North Cork Creameries’ operations paint a disquieting picture of how regulators are performing

Russian drones violated Polish airspace on the night of Sept 9/10 in what NATO & European officials have suggested was an intentional Russian incursion. The large number of Russian drones that violated Polish airspace suggests that this was likely an intentional Russian effort.

I respect Anil so I want to talk seriously about harm reduction and public health messaging.

First let me acknowledge that yes, many regular, not-super-online people are trying out AI tools. Of course they are! It's been aggressively pushed into everything and given heavy institutional support.
anildash.com
this is the really ineffective head-in-the-sand reaction a lot of folks on Bluesky tend to have if you talk about any harm reduction-based approach to the reality that millions of people are using AI tools today. The current approach to critiquing AI is obviously not working, but they don't care.

Al Overview

+1
No, Dunkin' Cereal Milk is not gluten-free because it contains milk, which is a common allergen, and as a result, it is not suitable for those with celiac disease or gluten intolerance.
However, coffee drinks, dairy milk, and non-dairy milks like oat, almond, and coconut milk are naturally gluten-free at Dunkin'.

I'm terrible at updating you all on conservation and ecology work, but I can promise you this:

It is the biggest year for Irish camera trapping since records began, and it's not even close.

Why is this important? With this data, we can guide management and learn more about Irish nature.

Travelling outside the EU this summer? You can count on the EU for help!

If something goes wrong, and your country does not have an embassy or consulate in the country that you are travelling to, you can get help from another EU country that does - your right as an EU citizen.

A meme with two pictures of a boy in a red shirt. In the upper picture, he looks scared and has the following text next to him: Losing my passport where my country doesn't have an embassy. In the bottom picture, he looks happy and confident, has EU stars behind him and the text says: Realising EU citizens can get help from any EU country’s embassy.

To an extent... the problem is (anecdotally) now relegated to a few locals and ignorants, compared to a LOT of tourists that go specifically to feed and approach deer. It's quite difficult to do socioeconomic studies as well as wildlife behavioural ones on these things...!
adamfsmith.bsky.social
Deer, seals, the whole bunch... People will willfully ignore signage and instructions for a photo.

This is also wildlife crime.

The only thing for it is wardens, fines, and a culture of shaming those who believe they should be allowed to approach, feed, or pick up wildlife for fun.

Yes trophy hunting is weird and unpleasant, but money from hunting funds the conservation of more land in Sub-Saharan Africa than is conserved in national parks. It is not as simple as most keyboard-jockeys from Europe or the USA think.
