When we look at opinion polls about what actually motivates voters and their choices at the ballot box, trans issues are often dead last. And it’s worth noting that much of that polling makes no distinction between positive or negative views of trans rights. As a voter, I’d rate trans rights as a significant factor in my decisionmaking, but I’m obviously quite pro-my-own-rights-and-dignity. Of the 4% of Virginian voters who said school policies on trans students were front of mind, it’s likely some of them were pro-trans.

You know the "is anyone on the plane a doctor?" trope? That's our national situation. And when the person who stands up isn't white British, we reply that we’d actually rather die. This is no less absurd than the mainstream, bi-partisan view on immigration in most developed democracies right now. Most people don’t see it because they’re not thinking through the causal chain (from restrictions to staffing shortages to outcomes). Part of going on the offensive is getting them to. Part of shaking off our timidity is believing we can.

In the fantasy, the father protects the family from a dangerous world—and especially from the sexual aggression of dangerous Others. But the truth is that most sexual abuse—most rape—most pedophilia—is not committed by strangers. It's committed by people you know. Trusted authority figures. Fathers and uncles, priests and pastors. And here's the thing. If this is the fantasy that consumes you, it is easier to enact with kids. To paraphrase Hegel, for this kind of predator, the thing about teenagers is that they are just adult enough to be worth desiring, but not adult enough to stand up to you. Fundamentally, children are easier to manipulate. Children are easier to control. Children are easier to groom. Reactionaries believe that women exist to be ruled over by men and bear them children. Of course adult women—and especially educated adult women—will have their own ideas about this state of affairs. But a child you can shape, you can make totally dependent on you, emotionally, socially, financially. What else is "headship" but an argument for pedophilia?

Killing ordinary American citizens is not popular. This is not going to help Republicans hold Congress in November, nor will continuing to do this kind of thing help put a Republican in the White House in 2029, never mind enabling a mythical Trump third term. But an unpopular, desperate, and yes, weak president still has extraordinary ability to spread suffering and death. In 2025 that was largely confined to immigrants, and that was bad enough. But these things never stay confined for long. The long tradition of American abolitionism often rested its argument on the fact that you cannot guarantee that institutions of brutality will never be turned against free men. Similarly, one cannot intensify the attack on non-citizens and expect citizens to come out unscathed.

The Trump administration and Stephen Miller think that all they need is the will to see this through, that their opposition is weak and easily bulldozed if relentlessly attacked. But they think their opposition is just elected Democrats, or what remains of uncaptured media, or activists. They don't seem to perceive what they're fomenting with ordinary people who are getting swept up in their untargeted assaults on local populations. If you keep pushing the masses like this, they will blow up, and it will be the predictable consequence of secret police engaging in lawless oppression. When people no longer feel that the law protects them or their community, but is instead a threat, how do you expect them to act?

More than the money itself, this budget shows a commitment on the part of Congressional Republicans to support Trump’s mass deportation project, whatever it might take, even as popular support for it collapses. Before this, there was some ambiguity; many of the administration’s actions, from its purges on the executive branch to the impoundment of congressionally-mandated spending, seemed to rest chiefly on congressional inaction. The laws that Trump’s DHS are breaking are after all laws passed by Congress. But this bill will give the green light on Trump’s deportation activities to date, and provide a huge infusion of resources to the effort. Should ICE burn through this budget like they did their last one, odds are they’ll continue to find Congress a willing partner in supplying the funds they need.

Simple amendments that IMO would have a decent chance of getting ratified:
-Mandatory secret ballot for impeachment trials and lower threshold for conviction -Banning pardons on members of the president's own family or anyone he has had a business or working relationship with -no presidential signature required for laws that delegate power to or take back power from the president

Consider the difference between the Ferguson protests in 2014 and the George Floyd protests in 2020. The latter are quite like January 6 in their history—achieving, in the beginning, a level of national unity that is quite rare, but ultimately fragmenting into mutually contradictory narratives held by mutually hostile groups. In the case of Ferguson, however, fragmentation was established from the start. What made the difference? There are probably a few factors that went into it, including just how brazen the murder of George Floyd was compared to the ambiguity of the particulars leading to Michael Brown’s death, but even here, the fact that there was a video in one and not in the other is critical. Even if the specifics of Brown’s death had been established from the start—even if the police themselves, politicians, journalists, and medical examiners all swore that matters unfolded exactly as one-sidedly as they did in Floyd’s case—in the absence of a video, it’s highly unlikely it would have played out the way the George Floyd protests did. Text demands some work on the part of the reader, some attention and effort at understanding. This is less so for, say, a social media post that is just a short sentence than it is for an article. But describing Brown’s death takes an article. Indeed, a detailed description—aimed at leaving no doubt about how things happened and why—is more demanding than the average news article. By contrast, even a ten minute video is not much effort for the viewer. Nine minutes was a terribly long time for someone to have their air cut off, but to a viewer, each second that passes where Floyd could not breathe feels like an eternity, every minute hammering in that this is too long. People didn’t need to watch the full video to grasp what had occurred, and text covering the incident only solidified the conviction the video produced that Floyd had been summarily executed. Even that old cynic Mitch McConnell, whose relationship with the truth is dodgy at best, said plainly: In no world whatsoever should arresting a man for an alleged minor infraction involve a police officer putting his knee on the man’s neck for nine minutes while he cries out ‘I can’t breathe’ and then goes silent. Video is by far the most potent format, for the experience of it comes closest to the experience of being an observer to something in our everyday life, the kind of experience we process as a matter of course. Viewing a video and understanding what we have viewed requires as little effort to understand as any format developed so far. When
