A major new report published for anyone interested in #innovation, #productivity, #industrialstrategy, #econsky. I'll now do a short thread that pulls out the main findings and recommendations...
britishacademy.bsky.social
The British Academy and @sciencecampaign.bsky.social commissioned Cambridge Econometrics to conduct a systems-based analysis of the strengths and weaknesses within the UK’s innovation system.

The UK needs many industrial strategies.

Smarter growth begins with understanding value chains in innovation, say Daniel Rathbone and Eleanor Hopkins.

We really need to throw the book at people for this kind of racially aggravated vandalism. Find them on cctv and social media, identify, charge and sentence to serious jail time

Not on an per capita basis

in which, I continue to plead for systems thinking in planning, reprising last night's bluesky rant, so people who read that can be excused. backofmind.substack.com/p/canaries-a...

China actually set a plan for 2025 and then did it, basically to the letter
In the UK we just update plans every 5 years without ever starting on any of them
adamlbrown.bsky.social
China is already better run economically (sorry, it is) and now more technologically advanced so it's only a matter of the time it takes to scale and distribute wealth over the sheer number of people that means it isn't already

We should maybe think about stopping before we overshoot

Literally EU convergence policy

If that were true, which it's not, then ai would surely be the most worthless invention of all time. The man's an imbecile

When the right no longer has anything to say about economics, what do you think they pivot to talking about instead?
adamlbrown.bsky.social
The flaws of capitalism have been manifesting enthusiastically for nigh on 40 years
adamlbrown.bsky.social
That's the very very far lunatic right like iea. Most merely sociopathically stupid and undereducated right wing think tankers from the likes of policy exchange, cps and asi were already in government as spads. They have full ownership of what happened
adamlbrown.bsky.social
Most right wing think tankers in the early 2010s were spads 5 years later. I know because I had to deal with them occasionally and they were so outrageously moronic that civil servants had to endlessly apologise on their behalf
adamlbrown.bsky.social
What right wing think tanks are you talking about exactly?

I still think the best decision would be to allow a small number (4) of counties to use it for home games, provided they are able to pair it with exceptionally fast bouncy pitches

All that money spent on cycling infrastructure wasted because the police are too lazy to fastforward through CCTV footage
adamlbrown.bsky.social
A real pig headed 'We've all had enough of experts' anti intellectual vibe coming from the quotes in that article
adamlbrown.bsky.social
Its incredibly unpopular amongst parents.

Isn't it the other way round? The billionaires that own the media maintain the social prohibition on the far-right only as long as centre-right parties are in the ascendency. The moment a period of centre-left political dominance looms, that prohibition mysteriously disappears

Buying cheap boots over and over rather than investing in good quality boots in the first place and thus saving money in the long run is basically a summary of the Conservative's policy on government finances.

I love Pratchett but I've never found him that funny. Its more of a wry smile/gentle roll of the eyes humour rather than laugh out loud.
adamlbrown.bsky.social
You mean you don't have one?
adamlbrown.bsky.social
I think we have a debate between centre-left and centre-right economic theory currently, its just that its two halves of the same cabinet briefing against each other. All the AI boosterism, planning deregulation, sacking the head of CMA stuff, is solidly centre right.
adamlbrown.bsky.social
They're following the republicans trajectory, when your economic policies have been tried and failed and your opponent is centre right anyway, you don't have much else to say, so leverage your client media to pivot to regressive social wedge issues
