Aside: I met several ppl in the US who thought Trump was a uniquely American problem, like a violently disagreeable but temporary aberration in the normal running of things, and in 4 years everything would be back as it was...

No that's so true. Hitler was mocked as "the Austrian Corporal". I also note that all these horrors are symptoms of geopolitical movements & economic upheavals way bigger than they are. So Farage will vaporise but will be replaced by someone more dangerous and efficient altogether

I may be wrong but I'm convinced that Farage will be a footnote. Ludicrous demagogues have taken over countries before, but Farage is so desperate & needy, with so little substance, so quick to snap, his lieutenants so obviously incapable of running anything, it can't hold

Excellent detailed and authoritative primer on phylloxera. One point is that it arrived in Spain in 1899 not 60, giving Bdx the opportunity to colonise Rioja and make it the wine it is today
