Once I was in, I made the most of it, but I was already 31. If I had money or resources to "invest" in my career when I was 21, rather than living off prize money or amateur stipends and student loans, I'd have had a different career, doping aside.

Anyway, back to work.

I complain a lot about the way things were in the 90s around doping and such, but that wasn't the only limiter for me at the time, and part of why I didn't eventually turn pro until 2003. All that dot com money finally made it down to my ability level, so I got an offer.

I turned down zero dollar contract offers to turn pro in the 90s because I was actually getting paid as an amateur and needed the money. I couldn't take a pay cut to turn pro, even to get my foot in the door.

I read this when it came out. I wonder what’s changed since then, especially post-pandemic.

If you’ve ever put a tube in a tubeless tire where the tire seals but the tube isn’t fully inflated and some air gets trapped, it’s like that.

That said, I’ve also had very good success saving tubulars with sealant. 🤞🏼

When I notice this, it’s always on a new tire and usually just air coming out of the casing at the valve hole, rather than out if the tube at the valve hole. This is why you notice it stops once on the rim. You’ve squeezed all the air out of the gap.

The tape really saves a lot of time, but also makes a much stronger bond. Glue on the rim, glue on the tire, tape as a layer, glue on the tape to mount, but just enough for it to be slippery so you can center the tire.

Slide a screwdriver under one spot and gently work it across. Then you sort of wiggle it down the wheel from side to side to pull up the tire (and tape if you got under it.)

Less glue, more layers. Have you seen the tutorial in my pinned stories on IG?

(OBRA is an option for insurance even outside of Oregon. Anyone can sanction through them.)

I agree and support that path.
