"THE SCORES PLEASE," I hear announced over the PA system, followed by the Chinese language speaker. I take Peter's right hand in my left. This is it. This is our moment. I don't speak Mandarin, so I can't react to the initial reading of the scores. But then the English language version comes in. "Genevieve Cartier and Peter Palmer have scored 149.75 points. They are currently in second place." No, I must have misheard them. That can't be right. That was a 155-point skate, easily. I know it. Second? "Currently," as if there's some way to change it. We were the last pair to skate, owing to our first-place finish in the short program. We had a three-point lead over the American pair. We won gold. We won. Second? "What the fuck?!"

But disorder is not the reason I need to warn Aiden about my apartment, though there's no way mine is as perfect as I imagine his to be. "It's just... well..." I decide to throw the door open and let him see for himself. And yes, there's a pair of leggings laid across the arm of my futon, and an empty box of Chinese food on the living room table, but that's not what I'm embarrassed about. I turn to Aiden and see how wide his eyes have gotten as he slowly steps in. He turns his gaze to the far wall, where a large canvas blocks the window. A canvas with the printed image of the podium at the 2021 World Championships, me and Peter in our masks waving to the camera, our gold medals draped over our necks. "And if you could throw Anastasia that far, I know you can toss my pixie body even farther." "Gen, how many times do I have to remind you, call me Stacy!" Anastasia chimes in from her elevated seat behind the bench. There isn't enough space between the bench and the boards for her to keep her leg extended, so Moira had this setup rigged up so Stacy could watch us and give Genevieve tips for working with me. Not that she needs them; she's ridiculously good on the ice, possibly better than Stacy ever was, even before her broken leg. I don't want to get cocky, but if we both perform up to our standards, the gold medal should be a lock. "At least once more, Anastasia, as always," Gen says with a smirk on her face before skating out to center ice.

"Gen, there's someone here who wants to see you!" This is my least favorite part of this job -- when a guest recognizes me from my old life and asks to meet me after the show. I always do it, because working in a theme park you never want to make a guest unhappy, but I grit my teeth through it every time. It's embarrassing to me that I've been reduced to this. Skating in "Rhythm of Nature" for audiences that are mostly just killing time between rollercoaster rides. At least during the Christmas season we get to skate a holiday-themed show, and people seem genuinely excited about that. This show, the one that runs the rest of the year, is pretty low on the park's entertainment priority list for the average guest. But at least it gives me the opportunity to skate, since I can't do that competitively anymore.

Gen picks up the menu again, covering her face, and I think I hear her say something behind it, but it's so quiet I can't make it out. "What was that?" She speaks up a bit, though her tone still suggests she's embarrassed to say it out loud. "Gossip Girl," she squeaks out. "Did you say you like to watch 'Gossip Girl?' Actually, you know what? That tracks. You're totally a Serena." Gen throws her menu down and gives me a death stare like I just suggested she didn't deserve to win any medal in 2022. "How dare you, Aiden Miller? That's quite possibly the most insulting thing anyone has ever said to me in my life." I put my hands up and shrug, my face expressing total confusion. I don't see how being compared to a rich, beautiful, powerful TV character could possibly be insulting. "I am a Blair Waldorf through and through," Gen says.

Don’t have it yet in The Games of Love, so we’ll go with gala, which Gen loves skating (and Chloé from The Ice Between Us did not)
"There's no gala scheduled for Skate America or nationals this year," he adds. "Well, there's still France," I say, hopeful that we'll be able to skate this program for a crowd at least once, while trying to ignore my disappointment that two of our biggest pre-Olympic events won't have a gala. I've always loved the post-event exhibitions we get to skate in. Peter and I would come up with fun programs we could never do in competition. One year we swapped costumes (not literally, since he could never squeeze his body into one of mine), with him wearing a dress and me wearing a tuxedo. I know some skaters dread these galas -- one of my old teammates in Canada did the same uninspired Celine Dion program for her gala four consecutive years, before making it her competition program for the Beijing Olympics -- but they give me something extra to look forward to.

"Do you get cramps often," I ask her. "Yeah, three days every month," she says. Before I can respond to her sarcastic joke, she lets out a moan that borders on obscene. God I want to be able to make her make that sound again, and not just because I'm massaging out a leg cramp. "Fuck, Miller, you're damn good at that," she says. I feel her calf muscle twitching in my hand, which is a sign the cramp is loosening. "Seriously, Gen, is this something that happens a lot? Because if so, we can make sure there's always someone here to help you out." That someone will be me. "No. I mean, yes, I've had cramps like this before, but it's not a regular thing," she says. She slowly flexes her foot as her calf muscle begins to return to normal function. I continue massaging it anyway, because I'm not going to stop until she tells me to, and I hope she doesn't tell me to for quite some time.
