I was thrilled that @climatefran.bsky.social let me play a supporting role in this work. It's a step towards the big goal of a broad theoretical framework for adaptation-oriented climate risk science.

New paper out today in @iopp-environment.bsky.social with @adamsobel.bsky.social illustrating how a value of information (VOI) framework can be useful for evaluating climate information intended for risk management and adaptation decisions:

Both science and universities in the US are in the process of being devastated by our current president and his administration. I felt compelled to use my little platform to say something about this. So instead of my uncle, I'm talking about this instead, this week on the podcast. bit.ly/3Ta2FIE

On the latest episode of The Sumner Files: the legendary Connie Burg! Connie was essential to the sounds of Mars and John Gavanti, and stayed lifelong friends with Sumner, as evidenced by how many of his paintings feature her face. It was an honor and a pleasure!

Trump's Budget is out. For NOAA, it's exactly what the previous passback document showed.

Such a privilege to host this panel earlier today with my own scientific heroes. But sobering to hear such statements from these distinguished scientists.

Lots of focus during this morning's International Panel + other keynotes on how recent cuts are affecting young students/scientists.

Sobering words from Sue Trumbore: "If you really want to be a scientist [and do top science], you might go to another continent to do that"

There are 2 previous historical cases of countries destroying their science and universities, crippling them for decades: Lysenkoism in the USSR and Nazi Germany. The Trump administration will be the 3rd.
It's not just budgets but research, institutions, expertise, and training the next generation.
Graphs showing 25 years of budgets for the National Institute of Health, NASA, and the NSF. In all cases, the proposed budget for next year is far, far below any year of the previous quarter century.

It’s hard to overstate how important Unidata is to weather research & communication, but the program paused most of its operations this month due to a lapse in funding from the NSF freeze. Staff is furloughed & it is unclear when they will be able to resume operations thebulletin.org/2025/05/deco...
Decommissioned, retired, paused: The weather, climate, and Earth science data the government doesn’t want you to see

It's outrageous that NASA GISS, one of the best earth & space science labs in the world, is being kicked out of its Columbia home. The outstanding scientists who work there can't say that publicly, but I can. And so can you --- call your reps, esp. (but not only) if you live in NYC or NY state.

Big day for the destruction of the US:
GOP budget: raise deficit by $2.3 trillion over 10 yrs, raise incomes of the richest 10% and cut incomes of the poorest 10%.
Cryptocurrency is stealing $$ from us to protect crypto bros.
Medicare/MediCal are being cut.
