I have the same opinion about the “section X discusses this” in articles. Done poorly, it’s pointless. Done well, coupled with a motivating intro, and you have a succinct summary of the science results in the context of recent research.

Disagree on the outline slide: keep it, but make sure it’s a good one. An overview of “these are the main science questions I will answer in this talk” is great. It should also flow naturally from your motivation.

I’m going to disagree here - I think the issue is unhelpful outlines. However an overview of “these are the main science questions I will answer in this talk” is great. It should also flow naturally from your motivation.

Wow, peeked at the text intending for just a quick skim and am still reading 30 min later. Great book (and authors - will be picking up more of their texts.) Thank you!
