There are some albums and movies that I think of as “jewel boxes.” They’re not necessarily “impressive” or “ambitious,” but they’re seamless. Crystal clear in their vision and intent and flawlessly executed. Exceptionally crafted, if not spectacular. Moondance is a go-to example.

Wilhoit’s Law implies that some people are not “conservative” because they believe the law should protect and bind all equally and some are not “conservative” because they’re excluded from the in-group. Balancing the demands of both is a Ds-only problem and imo central to the messaging challenge.

I haven’t really played it out, but I intuitively feel like GDP per capita multiplied by (1 minus the Gini Coefficient) could be an interesting comparison. It seems like over some spectrum it would somewhat adjust per capita GDP for inequality.

Not being argumentative, but you understand that Ohtani, for example, is not counted as $2M/yr for payroll tax purposes? He’s on the books as $2M plus the Net Present Value of the remaining $68M. That was the penguin’s point—the tax benefit of deferrals is much more player focused than team focused.

I call the ‘25 team the Refuse to Lose Dodgers. They were not a juggernaut! Hard to watch for most of the summer, didn’t clinch until 9/25, played a WC series, almost lost the WS about 250 times…but just would not go down. I know it feels inevitable after the fact, but they weren’t invincible.
