US Federal Reservoirs Could Host Enough Floating Solar to Power Half the Nation’s Clean Energy Needs
In a groundbreaking analysis that could reshape America's renewable energy landscape, researchers have discovered that federal reservoirs across the United States could support floating solar panels capable of generating up to 1,042 gigawatts of power—enough to meet approximately half of the country's projected solar needs for a decarbonized grid by 2050. The study, published in the journal Solar Energy, represents the first comprehensive assessment using advanced geospatial analysis to determine exactly where floating solar installations could be viable on federally managed waterways.
