"...remember what a fearless and trailblazing artist he really was. Not everything works, but you could say the same about Bowie... And judging him on that one video is akin to only remembering David Bowie for 'Let’s Dance'."

'The Songs Of Walter Donaldson' (44 track 2CD compilation, 2007) features 'Riptide', sung by Robert Palmer. Quite likely the most famous and most popular cover of what was otherwise an obscure song. And yes, it was produced by Bernard Edwards!

No one likes a tricky question, but have a go...

Q: What was something that Olivia Newton-John and Robert Palmer had in common?

Thank you... The obscured one he's holding is James Brown 'Hot Pants'. But what is the last one?

2003, #RobertPalmer in the Archives (colourised) . He's holding a James Brown album and another one above his head that I can't identify. The others are...

I asked Grok 3 to profile @Addictioners... Oh, the London taxi is a reference to his first 1974 music video. I am continuing to post both on X and here on B, and yes, the name is a riff on #Directioners and #Beliebers. It made so much more sense in 2013!

I didn't recognise the signature on this collectors item of #RobertPalmer's 'At His Very Best'. It's apparently long time drummer Dony Wynn. How cool. 🥁

RIP Connie Francis 1937 - 2025

#RobertPalmer grew up listening to Nat King Cole, Billie Holiday and #ConnieFrancis. As a teenager he called this his 'parents music' but he came to love these artists and their classic songs. On his final album Drive (2003) Palmer covered 'Stupid Cupid'.

There were some great performances that day. Yes Queen was eternally memorable. But Bowie and Ferry, to name only two, offered a great set 40 years ago.
... Another time, another place.

'Riptide' completed Palmer's contract with Island Records. The album opened with 'Addicted to Love'.

Perhaps, if live Aid had occurred a year later, #RobertPalmer might have performed in his own right - timing is everything

#ThePowerStation recruited singer/actor Michael Des Barres, formerly of Silverhead, Chequered Past & Detective, for the tour. Des Barres performed at the Live Aid charity concert in Philadelphia. The band folded by year's end. Palmer released 'Addicted to Love' in January 1986

13 July 1985 - 40 years ago today Robert Palmer didn't play #LiveAid with The Power Station. Having refused to go out on the road with the band, being critical of only having 8 songs to perform, Palmer was replaced.

It turned out to be the biggest rock and roll gig of the century. #LiveAid40

What is your favourite Saturday night record?

RP - I don't draw the distinction: every night is Saturday night. So I'd choose Pink,
"I'm coming out/So you better get this party started,"
haha!
