As someone who no longer writes code every day, I keep my Go skills from eroding by continuing to study the Go language spec. It's hard to read because EBNF syntax is used to describe language features, which forces me to write, or search for, working code examples that use those features.

I've been using OpenAI's gtp-oss:20b model while studying the Go language spec, and I was surprised to see it make up things that don't exist in the spec. For example, "complex_literal" isn't mentioned anywhere in the spec, but it was explained in the response when I asked about imaginary literals.

Thanks to some really helpful responses, I'm now providing snippets* of the Go language spec in my prompts, and the responses are a lot better.

* I copy the section I want the model to explain into a text file, then drag and drop that text file into the Ollama UI before submitting my prompt.

We've reduced intelligence to what people can do with computers, which is fueling the current hype cycle.

Live demos require a lot more work, and are extremely risky, but it's easier to recover from mistakes if you treat live demos like a jazz performance instead of trying to hit every note perfectly.
Only regret for this first round of #KubeCon #CloudNativeCon keynotes: while I loved the super smooth demos, the days of _live_ demo on stage with a laptop seem to be long gone, everything is recorded 🙁

I miss the @kelseyhightower.com vibe a bit, hope to see it come back in the upcoming days!

In case you're wondering, Elon Musk owns roughly 400 million shares of Tesla stock (1/8 of the company). Every time TSLA drops by $1/share, Musk's net worth drops by $400 million. A $10/share drop means a $4 billion hit. It's down $40/share today, or a $16 billion loss for Musk (on paper).

Most of my promotions were based on my ability to attach my work to the metrics below. Working at a major cloud provider made this a lot easier because we tracked everything. It largely comes down to earning and sharing the credit across different teams including engineering, product, and sales.
1. Impact. How much revenue does my work protect or generate?

2. Quality. Does my work meet or exceed customer expectations?

3. Efficiency. Reward making the right buy versus build decision.

4. Reusability. How do others leverage my work?

5. Supportability. How much work do I create for others?
a question for the people who write code for money:

if you could wave a magic wand and have your performance/promotability measured on any 5 metrics of your choice, what would those metrics be?
