Our fav appetizer we had in O’ahu was a Macadamia Nut Crusted Goat Cheese Spread at the Tommy Bahama rooftop bar we ate at (twice) & I hoped there was a copycat recipe, but lo and behold, Tommy Bahama shared their recipe online. Our first morning in Waikiki, hubs and I walked to the famous Kona Coffee Purveyors, and we waited an hour in line, but there was no way we weren’t going to try it while we were there. I ordered a slice of quiche, their banana almond chocolate croissant, and a cappuccino.

We ate at some awesome places in Waikiki. We had pre-gamed a lot of restaurants ahead of time, watching YouTube videos about great happy hour spots, and good places to eat. Our very first night, quite exhausted, we went to the Iron Chef restaurant, Morimoto. The sticky ribs almost defy description.

I saw a Red-Billed Leiothrix at Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden, and it was only one of two places that I did. The other time I saw this bird was on a birding tour that I took later in my trip to Oahu. These were the best pics I was able to get of one. What a beauty! #birds #Oahu 🪶

Here are some of the birds I saw at Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden in Oahu. This isn’t a complete record of the birds I saw there because some I saw in other places and took better pics than the ones I took at the Botanical Garden. I just about lost my dang mind over each lifer I saw in Hawaii.

Locals call them trash birds, and that’s fair, but they were new to me so I took a ton of pics of them, lol. A Red-crested, or Brazilian Cardinal in the grass. A bird with a brilliant red head and crest, white neck and underparts, and a gray/dark back. I took lots of pics of this bird as it is common to see in Oahu. A picture of a Red-whiskered Bulbul. A striking bird with a black head and crest; a red patch sits above a white patch on the side of its face; it has a white belly, dark back, and a red vent. A picture of a White-rumped Shama, or a Shama Thrush. A black bird, with a russet belly, and a large white patch on its rump, it has a very long, black tail. This is a bird that is very popular in the pet industry because it has a beautiful song and many people keep them as pets.

We’re back home now and I want to slowly begin sharing pics from our trip to Oahu. On our second full day there, still jet-lagged, hubs and I took an Uber out of Waikiki, and we went to the Hoʻomaluhia botanical garden. We hiked around for a few hours. Stunning views, incredible plants & birds. 1/3

Back at Maui Brewing Co for more of their dang delicious Black Garlic Truffle Fries and a different cocktail. This time I ordered the True North, made with Ocean Organic vodka / Kula lavender syrup / pineapple juice / mint / cucumber. Incredible.

For those of you following along at home. One lesson per day hasn’t gotten me as far along as one might think, but that’s not the point for me. For me, this daily practice is an opportunity for me to focus and be present with something. I treat it like a meditation.
