I wonder if the pandemic has a role to play? Lockdown meant no nearly new sales etc so new parents were buying more stuff new, so there’s subsequently a glut of second hand stuff pushing the prices down

I get annoyed when Absolute Radio 90s plays Fools Gold (released 1989) but clearly they’ve decided they’ve decided it’s part of the 90s pantheon more than other songs actually released that decade for a reason

A lot of my generation got into 80s music from hearing it in computer games. GTA Vice City in particular, but my brother discovered The Jam from hearing Town Called Malice on FIFA 2004.

Fair enough, maybe I haven’t given them enough of a chance. I’ve found a lot of their songs sound quite same-y so haven’t paid much attention to the lyrics.

Too many one hit wonders in the replies here - I think there needs to be a bit of iconoclasm in your choices. With that in mind I can think of Shiver by Coldplay, Love at First Sight by Kylie Minogue, Under the Bridge by Red Hot Chili Peppers and Learn to Fly by Foo Fighters

I’m pretty sure most people would travel by train more if it was free. If fare dodging wasn’t possible some of them wouldn’t travel at all or travel a different way

Not that I think this is a useful counter argument or reason not to try to reduce fare evasion, but there’s a big difference between saying the fares evaded amount to £130m and TfL would have an extra £130m of it reduced fare evasion to zero. Most of the fare dodgers probably wouldn’t pay.

I remember on the dvd commentary to Phoenix Nights Peter Kay explains that in the scene where Jerry is in Asda singing ‘black bin bags’ to the tune of Men in Black they wanted him singing ‘corned beef!’ to the tune of Call Me, but Blondie said no. He’s never forgiven Debbie Harry.

There’s definitely a thing where boomers feel able to dismiss millennial/Gen Z culture as niche whenever they don’t get a reference but we’re seen as ignorant if we don’t get cultural references from before we were born. It becomes very apparent at pub quizzes!
