SEIU is an excellent union as well, but this is just to say that unions composed of hundreds of thousands of members across the nation are more than just the political or rhetorical decisions of leadership. The tensions within the UAW are symptomatic of larger tensions between kinds of workers.

While recent decisions by UAW leadership may leave a lot to be desired, and mixing traditional manufacturing workers with knowledge worker locals can create some tension, I will say that UAW was very helpful in getting the grad workers at my last school organized (not just in CA).

It pains me to say this but I think narrow craft unions are probably the most effective form for initally getting SWEs into labor organizations, as this allows them to feel like Special Little Boys who are a cut above the rest while also handholding them through basic solidarity principles.

A raspberry pi homebuild type thing would actually be very cool and probably very enlightening for the average student. This system would require actually tech-literate teachers who are also not just learning how to do this in tandem with their students.

This was a class that needed to be taught by a competent, average-tech-savvy adult in a computer lab setting in like elementary or middle school. As then, I imagine there are kids who run circles around teachers in digital classes today and kids who do not know what a pdf is.
