I was conflicted, but fair play - the matted, bloody audacity of this portrait is mesmerising me. Was he meant to look like the porter of the hell dimensions crossed with an escaped SCP? Who knows, but it's giving absolute Screaming Pope levels of unheimlich and I reluctantly love it.

Also, thanks to all the twitter folk who got The Day of the Triffids trending earlier. A moment of the old, fun twitter humour, it made me smile.

Thrilled to have seen the northern lights for the first time, in (to quote Dorothy) our own back yard. Couldn't see the colours at all with the naked eye, just a wispy purple-grey, but the night setting on my phone camera revealed them. Glorious.

bsky's open, quote one picture of your cat to promote your cat

(I just coincidentally posted my cat but I can do it again, right?)

As a newish bsky user I feel I should get better at paying the cat tax. Please enjoy this regal, fluffy side-eye.

But as a longtime ravenous consumer of doomed polar misadventures & ice-death-ghost-horror fables (both historical and imagined), I've got to say the opening chapter of Where The Dead Wait is calling to me...
Book: "his last meal was boiled boots and lichen..."

A few books from my to-read pile: The Ship Beneath The Ice by Mensun Bound, Where The Dead Wait by @unheimlichmanvr.bsky.social and What Feasts At Night by @tkingfisher.bsky.social. Spoiled for choice...

For me Coda is a perfect comic: a heartfelt, truthfully bumpy love story buried in a joyous & often hilarious subversion of epic fantasy, fizzing with delight in both the medium and the tropes it's having so much fun skewering but never losing sight of an essential tenderness. 2/2

Next, Coda: False Dawns by @sispurrier and @matiasbergara - a 5-issue spinoff from their original glorious Coda comic series. (It started last year, but finished in January.) I honestly don't have words for all the ways I love this book. 1/2 #aedalyreads

Books read in 2024, a thread. First: Ascension by @bingewriting.bsky.social. It starts with one of my favourite ghost/horror story tropes, the ominous 'found manuscript' foreword, and climbs from there to an icy, uncanny thriller with love and heartbreak at its core. Terrific. #aedalyreads
