Silent Book Club (of Death) x Morbid Anatomy Library

Happy 10 years to Silent Book Club! You get to do the best part of a book club, which is the reading, with no requirement to discuss afterwards. It was also my first time at the incredible Morbid Anatomy Library, a space that combines death,…
Silent Book Club (of Death) x Morbid Anatomy Library
Happy 10 years to Silent Book Club! You get to do the best part of a book club, which is the reading, with no requirement to discuss afterwards. It was also my first time at the incredible Morbid Anatomy Library, a space that combines death, art, anatomy, and magic…I spent as much time looking around as reading. It was a fun setting for a meeting of the…

Talking about Conservation Cemeteries
HK was on hand to talk about the challenges of starting a conservation cemetery during a discussion hosted by Vanessa Bertozzi with Partners for Climate Action Hudson Valley. The video above starts at 40:05 where HK (and Suzanne) answer why there are less than 20 conservation cemeteries in the U.S. but the entire hour-long video is worth your time. Suzanne Kelly of Natural Burial Grounds at the Town of Rhinebeck Cemetery gives a longer talk about "The Ecological Benefits of Natural Burial."

Harvest Moon Festival (Chuseok) Korean Edition

Today is #chuseok, the Korean iteration of #harvestmoon! It’s great to get together, put on colorful #hanbok, and eat all day. My family takes it old school with performing a #charae ceremony first thing in the morning to give thanks. My favorite part…
My favorite part is physically opening the front door at the start to invite the #ancestors in; I imagine a gaggle of old timey ghosts, happy to visit us. Afterwards, it's time for #kpop #karaoke and #danceparty. I love being able to share these traditions with the kids, both old and new. Happy Chuseok!

Understanding Green Burials in Green-Wood Cemetery
It was a packed house on a Sunday afternoon at historic Green-Wood Cemetery, necessitating overflow seating in the aisles and out the door of the modern chapel. You'd be forgiven for thinking a celebrity was in attendance but everyone was there to learn about natural burials. Amy Cunningham gave a moving educational talk, Sarah Lasswell provided hands on experience in shrouding and casket weaving, and Gabrielle Ungaro-Gatto (

Experimenting with Racoon Disposition in Local Soil Conditions

Experimenting with Racoon Disposition in Local Soil Conditions
Are you looking for the best activity with your kids in the last days of summer? Hold a #naturalburial in your yard for some #roadkill! I’ve been anxious about the performance of high-clay soil in the #hudsonvalley for decomposition so when I had a chance to add one point to the data set, I rounded up some volunteers from around the home to memorialize Billy the Racoon. We will share progress periodically! 😬

Walk a bridge for perspective

If an alien touched down and asked me to name humanity’s greatest invention, I wouldn’t hesitate: bridges. They don’t just get us from point A to point B; they connect people, places, and ideas. And let’s be honest, they are beautiful in their utility. Case in point:…

If an alien touched down and asked me to name humanity’s greatest invention, I wouldn’t hesitate: bridges. They don’t just get us from point A to point B; they connect people, places, and ideas. And let’s be honest, they are beautiful in their utility. Case in point: the humble Rip Van Winkle Bridge, where someone loved the view so much they actually installed a selfie frame—clearly designed with aliens and their extra-long arms in mind.

We are all not so different

As you know, life is both incredibly simple and incredibly complex. I once shared a cab with a Finance coworker and she asked if I thought my Chemistry degree was a waste of time in retrospect. My response was that the seat she is sitting on is over 99.99% NOTHINGNESS, and that the teeny bit of electrons/protons/neutrons that ARE there have such strong, dynamic forces that they are keeping her from falling through the seat and the bottom of the cab and becoming roadkill.
