Content moderation and acceptable-use policies could be solved through normative principals embedded in CanGPT. A publicly governed AI model could allow Canadians to debate and define these boundaries through democratic institutions rather than through technology firms.

If you look at who we invited to the table as part of the task force you can clearly see that all academics love AI. QUESTION: were there any critical AI scholars on the AI national task force? 👀
If you look at who was appointed to our AI national task force, there were lots of academics and university folks on that list. Our ministry heavily invests in academics through our three amazing national labs — Vector in Toronto, Mila in Montreal and Amii (Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute) in Edmonton. We work closely with the Digital Research Alliance. We are building a sovereign compute infrastructure program, a state-of-the-art Canadian-owned supercomputer that will be housed at universities because that’s about enhancing the ability of researchers to stay at the frontier. AI was essentially invented by Canadian advanced researchers. That’s Geoffrey Hinton, that’s Yoshua Bengio, that’s Rich Sutton. Our academic institutes really pioneered AI, so we have to keep Canada at the forefront.

WHEN we decide to regulate the AI industry, we will make sure that our well-paid ministers in the dept of heritage take care of the deepfake stuff, and the folks in the dept. of justice have offered to make a few laws about that, so you know, we good.
Do you have concerns about authenticity regarding AI — online scams, duplicating voices and images, that kind of thing? When we introduce legislation it will be about Canadians’ privacy and data. There will be aspects on dealing with deep fakes. There will be aspects on how we treat information related to children. That’s one aspect of things. We’re going to have the minister of heritage dealing with an online harms bill that will have elements of that. And we’ll have the minister of justice who also has promised some legislation around non-consensual deepfake imagery. So we’ll have three ministries dealing with those kinds of things to make Canadians feel safe and secure.

Business, business, business....
This is why we need to make sure that we have businesspeople that start their businesses here, they grow their businesses here, they expand their businesses here — and that Canada becomes, with this technology, a headquarters nation. My concern would be if this only benefits the few, not the many. My concern would be if we’re not starting companies here but we’re starting companies in other places. We are seized with these questions and there are not easy answers.

As everyone knows, AI means opportunities galore.
As a journalist, you always had an interest in technology. Wearing your journalistic cap, what are your concerns about AI? Every new technology of this scale, this scope, is going to have massive opportunities and there are going to be risks associated with that as well. Our job is to make sure that the opportunities are significantly more impactful than the risks.

AI for all = data centres. 🙄
If we’re going to provide AI for all, that means we need to build up our sovereign infrastructure — everything from data centres and clouds, so we need a sense of security. We need to make sure that we drive adoption, and that it’s done in a safe and secure way — a way that protects our values and reflects our values, and then, because we’ve got to trade globally, projects our values. We’ve got to make sure that AI is used for all in a productive and trustworthy way. He asked me to do that, and I am endeavouring to complete that mission.

When Mark Carney asked you serve in his cabinet as Canada’s first minister of AI and digital innovation what were the prime minister’s reasons for creating the new portfolio? He recognized this kind of Gutenberg moment, that we’ve got political realignment and technological revolution happening, and that AI was no longer a subset of industry. It was something on its own that demanded its own ministry to focus on full-time.

The bit about the criticism of no actual scientists attending this ahem "health" conference with the "most powerful man in science" as per the Atlantic is included in the section dedicated to the merits of beef tallow. More very serious journalism to add to this week's archive of news compost.
Beef-tallow crisps The lack of representation of scientists dismayed some MAHA supporters, Diana Lutfi, founder of the Healing Science Policy Institute, a MAHA-aligned advocacy organization in Washington DC, told Nature at the summit. Lutfi and her colleagues organized thousands of scientists and clinicians in support of Kennedy before his confirmation as health secretary by the US Senate. She argues that tapping this network is key to cementing MAHA’s legacy beyond Kennedy. “But they’re seen as all corrupt by Kennedy and his inner circle,” she said, who “want to punish them for their role in COVID”. MAHA Action, a New York City-based policy group that organized the summit, did not respond before publication to a request for comment about Lutfi’s statements.

The tech industry excels at exploiting a set of circumstances into profit and by doing so creates other problems for which another device/app can be created & so on & so forth. Spot-on observation of the pandemic's influence on use cases of ChatGPT; it also opened gates to more digital surveillance.
What if ChatGPT came just six years before, into a different social context? Would it be optimized to different use cases? We shouldn't overstate the pandemic as the sole factor of how AI has come to be defined, but we shouldn't ignore it, either. ChatGPT may have changed the world, but the world had already changed. Companies took what we needed most at that historic moment and optimized machines to give it to us, kicking off a feedback loop that continues to define it.

Even worse -- it's a pyramid scheme. Once you get these certifications, you can aspire to "Join a community of Education Champions." Seems like in-house promotion is an essential part of AI EdTech paradigm. Also seems like a cult.

Reviewer: On top of paying $$$ for these surveillance devices so you can feed them your biometrics to be bought and sold by other companies, you have to pay a subscription to access your own data, but hey that's life. Bummer.

Love how "AI Mode" leads the options and "Shopping" usurps "Video" and "Images" as search functions. (Seems this order depends on what term you enter in the field, however, AI maintains the lead in all instances.) As a research tool, the internet is now garbage but "AI is efficient," they say.🙄

After Mac update, Google search also has "AI Mode" ! Is this the new iteration of the AI Overview bullshit? I assume Google will circle even faster around the drain to make the already terrible non-AI search modes useless to force ppl to use the AI version so we can all be homogeneously dumb.
