I recommend trying the 2nd monitor vertical. When I got my new monitor and the 2nd one wouldn't fit horizontal next to it I swapped it to vertical. Really enjoy it so far. Cause I can have discord and a video stacked on top of each other and not have to turn as much.

A happy medium or a way to work towards a shorter might be two layer (i don't really know what's it called) or an undercut. So you can have longer layer on the outside and a short layer on inside. And tie up your long layer whenever you feel like getting it out of the way.
